Rush Helps Lady Statesmen Come Back to Defeat Shorter

Box Score ROME, Ga. – Alondrea Rush scored 19 second half points to help lead the Delta State University women's basketball team to a 65-57 victory over Shorter, in come-from-behind fashion, on Saturday at the Winthrop-King Centre.

TURNING POINT:
  • With the Lady Statesmen trailing 43-41 with 9:19 left, Alondrea Rush scored eight points in 3:08 to give DSU a 52:45 lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • DSU was 8-of-22 (36 percent) in the first half, while the hosts were 11-of-29 (37.9 percent). The Lady Hawks were 7-of-14 in the second period.
  • Shorter took advantage of 10 first half turnovers, scoring nine points.
  • DSU was just 3-of-6 from the free throw line in the first half, while Shorter was 7-of-10. Takisha Jordan, who led the Lady Statesmen with seven first half points, took all six DSU free throws.
  • DSU was just 14-of-27 (52 percent) in the second half, while holding Shorter to 8-of-26 ( 31 percent). DSU was 5-of-15 from long-range, while Shorter was just 3-for-21.
  • Both teams finished with 36 rebounds.
  • After committing 10 first half turnovers, the Lady Statesmen had just thre ein the second half. DSU scored 13 points off of Shorter miscues.
  • Alondrea Rush scored 19 points in the second half to lead all scorers with 25. Takisha Jordan finished with 16 and Alexis Ross had 10 to help the Lady Statesmen. Jasmine Gaines led the hosts with 17.

 INSIDE THE FLOW:
  • After trailing by as many as six points (9-3) in the first quarter the Lady Statesmen went on a 9-2 run over the final 6:10 to take a 12-11 lead after the first period.
  • Alondrea Rush tied the game at 17 on a three-pointer with 5:58 in the half, but Shorter used a big 14-4 spurt to take a 31-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Lady Statesmen were held without a field goal for the final 4:05 of the half.
  • The Lady Statesmen stormed out of the locker room in the second half, going on an 8-2 run to cut the Shorter lead to 33-29.
  • Shorter went back ahead 38-29 on a three-pointer by Roni Richardson, but the Lady Statesmen used a 10-3 spurt to trim the deficit to 41-39 going into the final quarter.
  • Rush led the Lady Statesmen charge in the fourth quarter, scoring eight points in two minutes, to give the Lady Statesmen a 50-45 lead with 6:58 left.
  • After Shorter used a layup to get to within 52-47 with 4:28 left, the Lady Statesmen went 11-of-14 from the free throw line the rest of the way to seal the victory.

NOTABLES:
  • DSU has held opponents to less than 60 points in 12 of its 18 games.
  • The 25 points by Rush are one fewer than her career high, and marks the sixth time this year that she has scored more than 20.
  • Jordan has scored in double figures in all but two games this season.
  • DSU's 13 offensive rebounds tied a season high.
  • DSU has held opponents to 10 points or fewer in a quarter in 12 of the last 15 games.
