Statesmen Fall in Overtime Thriller at Shorter

Box Score ROME, Ga. - Shorter outscored the Delta State University men's basketball team 8-2 over the final 60 seconds of regulation, and earned a 78-77 overtime victory, on Saturday at the Winthrop-King Centre.

TURNING POINT:
 
  • With the Statesmen leading 77-75 with just over six seconds left, TayVaughn Major was fouled on a three-pointer and converted all three free throws to helping the hosts steal the victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • Delta State shot a blazing 32-of-55 (58 percent) from the field, including 16-of-24 (67 percent) in the second half. The Hawks finished 26-of-49 (53 percent) including 12-of-26 (46 percent) from three-point range. DSU hit three of its four three point attempts.
  • The Hawks were 14-of-21 (67 percent from the free throw stripe, while the Statesmen were 10-of-13 (77 percent)
  • The Green-and-White outrebounded Shorter 27-23.
  • PJ Davis tallied a career-high 33 points for the Statesmen, including 22 in the second half and overtime. Brett Warner had 14 and Cornelius McIntosh added 13 for DSU. Amonte Potter had 22 points to lead Shorter.

 INSIDE THE FLOW:
 
  • Neither team led by more than three points in a closely contested first half, until Josh Burnett hit a three-pointer with 1:33 in the half to give the Hawks a 33-29 lead. 
  • A free throw by Burnett with 55 seconds left in the opening half, capping off a 10-2 run, to give Shorter a 34-29 halftime lead,
  • Burnett's three pointer with 13:03 left in the second half gave Shorter its biggest lead of the game (48-38).
  • DSU responded with a 16-5 run, taking a 54-53 lead on a three pointer by Cornelius McIntosh with 5:18 left.
  • The Statesmen led 67-61 with 1:00 left, but Shorter sunk a three point shot and got to within one point after it made a layup after a rebounded missed free throw.
  • Warner's layup with 16 seconds left gave the Statesmen a 69-66 lead, but Potter was fouled on a three point attempt, with eight seconds left, and made all three free throws to send the game to overtime.
  • With the Statesmen leading 77-75, in overtime, Shorter capitalized on a DSU turnover and was again fouled on a three point attempt.
  • Major stepped to the line and converted all three free throws with seven seconds left to win the game for the Hawks.

NOTABLES:
 
  • Davis' 33 points are a career-high. Davis also moved into 13th place all-time in scoring (1,168 career points), 10th in rebounds (676), and tied for ninth in games played (111) for his career in Green-and-White.
  • The 58.2 percent shooting performance was the highest of the year for the Statesmen.
  • DSU's four three-point attempts are a season low.
  • Shorter's 78 points are the second most that DSU has surrendered this season.
  • Cornelius McIntosh has a career-high 13 points.
