UNA Uses Big Third Quarter to Run Away From Lady Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss. – No. 21 North Alabama outscored the Delta State University women's basketball team 29-9 in the third quarter and ran away with a 74-49 victory over the Delta State University women's basketball team, in Gulf South Conference action on Thursday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

TURNING POINT:
  • UNA opened the third quarter on a 16-0 run and ended the frame with a 61-31 lead.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Lady Statesmen were 9-of-28 (32.1 percent) from the floor in the first half, while UNA was 10-of-23 (44 percent). UNA was just 2-of-9 from three-point range, but converted 10-of-16 (63 percent from the free throw line. DSU was just 3-of-6 from the charity stripe in the first half.
  • UNA converted 10 DSU miscues into 11 points, and outscored the Lady Statesmen 14-8 in the paint.
  • The Lady Statesmen outrebounded the Lions 20-14 in the first half, including a 9-3 advantage on the offensive glass.
  • Alexis Ross led the Lady Statesmen with six first half points. Emma Wallen and Michaela DeKilder had seven points apiece to pace the visitors. Simone Jackson failed to score in the first half, but recorded seven rebounds.
  • DSU was held to just 8-of-23 in the second half, and finished 17-of-51 (33 percent). UNA shot 16-of-29 in the second to finish 26-of-53 (50 percent). The Lions converted 20-of-27 (74 percent) from the free throw line, including 10-of-11 in the second half. The Lady Statesmen were 14-of-24 (58 percent) from the charity stripe. 
  • The Lions owned the boards in the second half, doubling up DSU 22-11.
  • UNA dominated the paint, outscoring the Lady Statesmen 44-20 and had a 9-0 advantage in second chance points.
  • Alexis Ross led the Lady Statesmen with 17 points, while Takisha Jordan had 10. Brittany Panetti led UNA with 19.
 INSIDE THE FLOW:
  • DSU took an early 4-0 lead, but UNA responded with an 11-4 spurt to give it an 11-8 advantage with 4:08 left in the opening quarter. The Lady Statesmen answered with a 5-2 run to tie the game at 13 after the first period.
  • After Takisha Jordan hit a free throw to cut the UNA lead to 23-20 with 1:40 left in the half, the Lions reeled off a 9-2 run to take a 32-22 lead into the locker room at halftime. The UNA run was aided by five straight points from the charity stripe, including four technical free throws.Both teams had scoring droughts of over four minutes in the second quarter, as UNA was held without a bucket for 4:54, and the Lady Statesmen for 4:08.
  • UNA stormed out of the locker room following halftime, as it started the third period using 6-of-7 shooting, going on a 16-0 run over 3:04 to take a 48-24 lead with 5:51 left in the third period.
  • The Lady Statesmen had two scoring droughts of over four minutes in the third quarter, while UNA shot a blistering 11-of-14 (79 percent) to take a 61-31 lead going into the final frame.
  • DSU held UNA to just 13 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lions 18-13 in the final frame.

NOTABLES:
  • The 17 points for Ross are a career high.
  • UNA's 74 points are the most the Lady Statesmen have allowed this season, but it marked the third-lowest point total of the season for the Lions.
