Late Run Lifts SLU Past Statesmen, 68-63

HAMMOND, La. –Southeastern Louisiana University used a late 5-0 run to claim a 68-63 win over the Delta State University men's basketball team on Tuesday at the University Center.

Mathew Wilson led the Statesmen with 23 points, making 9-of-19 shots from the floor that included four 3-pointers.

TURNING POINT:
  • Tied 63-63 with 3:09 left in the game, the Lions went on a 5-0 run to close the game and claim the five-point win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Wilson scored 23 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the floor that included 4-of-10 from beyond the arc.
  • Justin Slocum had nine points and nine rebounds and Brett Warner had nine points.

  • Benford's free throw with :48 to go gave the Statesmen a 34-33 halftime lead.
  • The Statesmen opened up a 46-41 lead after a Slocum jumper with 13:51 remaining in the second half.
  • SLU held a 51-50 lead when Wilson turned in a four-point play to put the Statesmen ahead 54-41 at the 9:03 point of the second half.
  • Cedric Harper tied the game 63-63 with a layup but could not give the Statesmen the lead after his free throw rolled out with 3:09 left to play.
  • Greenwood scored SLU's next four points and Julien added a free-throw with 10 seconds to highlight the Lions' run to close the game.
NOTABLES:
  • The game featured 10 ties, three ties in the final six minutes of the contest.
  • Delta State and Southeastern Louisiana last met on Feb. 17, 1979 as the Statesmen claimed a 79-59 win in Cleveland.
  • Southeastern Louisiana appeared on the DSU schedule as a Gulf South Conference member before exiting the league for NCAA Division I and the Southland Conference in the late 1970's.
