ITTA BENA, Miss. – Brett Warner scored 21 points and
Justin Slocum had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead Delta State University to a 70-67 exhibition win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday.
Matthew Wilson had eight points followed by
Armon Benford,
Cliff Fernandez and
Cedric Harper added six points. Benford had a game-high 16 rebounds and eight assists.
The game was tied 32-32 at halftime and before edging MVSU 38-35 in the second half. The Green-and-White made 16-of-35 shots (45 percent) from the floor and went 4-for-8 (50 percent) from 3-point range in the second half to earn the win.
Delta State finished the game 9-of-23 for 39 percent from 3-point range was 28-of-68 overall for 41 percent on the day.
Dante Scott with 28 points and Tereke Eckwood had 11 points for the Delta Devils.
Mississippi Valley State made 25-for-58 for 43.1 percent and connected on 8-of-24 from beyond the arc for 33.3 percent.
Delta State outscored MVSU 26-22 in the paint and 18-8 on second-chance points while the Statesmen reserves added 24 points.
The Statesmen opened up the 2018-19 regular season against Eckerd College in the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Challenge on Fri., Nov. 9 at 12 p.m. (CT) in Lakeland, Fla. Delta State will play host Florida Southern on Sat., Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. (CT).
