CLEVELAND, Miss.- The Delta State University women's basketball team is set to begin its 2018-19 campaign at the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Crossover in Miami Shores, Fla., on Friday, Nov. 9. DSU opens its season against Nova Southeastern, and will wrap up the event on Saturday, Nov. 10 versus Barry. This will be the third straight season the Lady Statesmen have participated in the event.

TIP-OFF NEWS AND NOTES:
The Lady Statesmen enter the season after a down 2017-18 season compared to Lady Statesmen standards, finishing the year 12-15 overall and 10-10 in GSC play.
For the second straight season, the Delta State University women's basketball team has been picked to finish seventh in the Gulf South Conference Preseason Poll. Defending GSC Tournament Champion Union was picked first in the GSC in the poll, tallying 142 points, including 10 first place votes.
Valdosta State was second with 124 points, while also collecting two first place votes. The Lady Blazers were just ahead of West Florida, who had one first place vote and 121 points. Lee and West Georgia rounded out the top five, followed by West Alabama and DSU. Alabama Huntsville and Christian Brothers tied for eighth, and Mississippi College rounded out the top-10.
The Lady Statesmen return three players that saw action in 2017-18, including the league's returning leading scorer,
Alondrea Rush (15 ppg). DSU also returns its leading rebounder,
Raven Johnson (6.8 rpg), along with veteran guard
Aliyah Herod and redshirt freshman
Kirstin Brown.
Seven newcomers round out the roster for the Lady Statesmen, including transfers
Ernesha Chatman,
Nia Johnson,
Tamia Cunigan,
Zyaire Ewing,
Quantesha Patterson,
Jordan LeNoir and
Frederica Haywood. The GSC tabbed Chatman and Haywood as Top Newcomers.
Nova Southeastern Notes:
The Sharks open the season picked fourth in the SSC, The Sharks collected 66 points, tied with Embry-Riddle in the poll. Nova Southeastern finished 2017-18 with an overall record of 13-14 and 9-11 against conference opponents. This season, the Sharks return nine and have five newcomers. Returners are starting guard Alison Hughes, an All-SSC Second Team and All-SSC Newcomer Team honoree. She Shark squad with 13.1 points per game last season, ranking her in the Top-10 in the league. Also returning is Skyla Osceola who posted a 3.33 assist-turnover ratio in 2017-18, which ranked her second in the nation.
Barry Notes:
The Bucs were chosen to finish sixth in the SSC receiving 65 total votes. The Bucs finished 19-11, 11-9 in the SSC last season They lost four starters from last year, which includes First-Team All-Conference, pick Kiara Palmer. Returning for the Bucs are senior guard Ida Andersson and sophomore guard Harriett Swindells. Andersson, the lone returning starter, averaged 10.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, she hit 59 three-pointers last season. Swindells was the Bucs' top player off the bench last season. She averaged 6.8 points per game and hit 49 three-pointers.
