CLEVELAND, Miss. –
Frederica Haywood scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to power the Delta State University women's basketball team to a 65-45 victory over the University of Montevallo on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. It was her second double-double of the season and third straight double-digit rebounding effort.
Ernesha Chatman (12) and
Zyaire Ewing (11), who just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, joined Haywood in double figures for the Lady Statesmen. Aaliyah Rice paced the Lady Falcons with 12.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delta State opened the first quarter with a 7-2 lead, holding the Lady Falcons scoreless for 6:19 of the opening frame. Shyan Flack's two free throws broke the scoring drought for Montevallo with 3:41 to go in the first.
- Montevallo's Paige Ward canned a 3-pointer with 53.9 seconds left in the opening quarter to cut the DSU lead to 9-6. The long jumper was the first field goal of the game for the Lady Falcons.
- The Lady Statesmen ended the first quarter with an 11-8 lead. DSU shot 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from the floor in the quarter while UM connected on a mere 18.2 percent (2-of-11).
- Delta State dominated play in the second quarter, outscoring Montevallo 11-3 to take a 28-17 lead in the locker room. Frederica Haywood, Zyaire Ewing, and Ernesha Chatman all scored six points apiece to lead the Lady Statesmen. Aaliyah Rice led UM with six points as well.
- The Lady Statesmen shot 50 percent in the third quarter, making 8-of-16 shots, to extend their lead to 44-30 at the end of the period.
- Kirstin Brown's traditional three-point play and Aliyah Herod's long jumper gave the Lady Statesmen their largest lead of the game to that point, 19 points, 52-33 with 6:19 to play.
- DSU edged UM 13-12 over the final minutes of the contest for the 65-45 victory.

- Delta State dominated the paint, outscoring UM 36-14.

- The Lady Statesmen out-rebounded the Lady Falcons 46-32.

- Delta State never trailed in the game, with the contest tied for just 36 seconds.
- Alondrea Rush, who ranks fourth in career 3-pointers made with 177, added to her career point total with six points. The Horn Lake, Miss., native moved past Moe Bell (2007-2011/1,006 points) into 36th on the Lady Statesmen's career scoring list with 1,009 points.
- Delta State owns an all-time record of 1,150-316-1, including 409 wins in Gulf South Conference play since 1984-85.
- Coach. Craig Roden, who owns a 568-496 career record, collected his 371st GSC victory. The Guntersville, Ala., native ranks second in career GSC victories, trailing former Lady Statesmen head coach Lloyd Clark with 495.
