Big Fourth Quarter Helps Lady Statesmen Defeat Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Staring a 48-42 deficit in the face headed to the final quarter, the Delta State University women's basketball team outscored Montevallo 21-10 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 63-58 victory over the Falcons in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Trustmark Arena.

TURNING POINT:
 
  • Trailing 55-54 with 3:44 to go, Erin Kate Richardson drilled a corner three-pointer to give the Lady Statesmen a 57-55 lead. DSU did not give the lead back the rest of the way, outscoring the Falcons 6-3 the rest of the game to snare the road win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • Only four players scored for the Lady Statesmen in the first half. Alexis Ross led all scorers with 12 points, while Alondrea Rush (10), Takisha Jordan (8) and Simone Jackson (4) provided the rest of the scoring. 
  • Delta State got a career-high 18 points from Alexis Ross, who led all scorers. Rush added 17 points, and Jordan tallied 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists while playing all 40 minutes for the Lady Statesmen.
  • DSU shot 23-for-50 (46 percent) for the contest, including a 4-for-10 mark from three-point land. They also went 13-for-19 mark (68 percent) from the foul line as a team.
  • Montevallo was 18-for-55 from the floor (33 percent), and went 9-for-25 (36 percent) from three. The Falcons knocked down 13-for-18 (72 percent) at the free throw line.
  • DSU outscored UM 22-12 in the paint, but UM out-rebounded the Lady Statesmen 35-34. 
  • Naukita Philpott and Kiya Sain each scored 13 points to lead the way for the Falcons. Alba Perez added nine points and 10 rebounds in support of Philpott and Sain.

 INSIDE THE FLOW:
 
  • Both teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the game, and Montevallo held a 9-6 lead at the first quarter media timeout. 
  • The Lady Statesmen edged the Falcons 9-8 over the final 4:44 of the first quarter, pulling within two points, 17-15, at the end of the opening quarter. 
  • Delta State built a 22-17 lead with 7:30 to go in the second quarter, getting a three-pointer and a jumper from Alondrea Rush as part of a 7-0 run. 
  • The Green-and-White used another run, this one an 8-1 spurt, to build a 34-26 lead at the half. DSU outscored UM 19-9 in the second. 
  • Montevallo flipped the script in the third quarter, holding DSU to a 1-for-10 mark from the field. On the offensive end, the Falcons outscored the Lady Statesmen 22-8 to take a 48-42 lead at the end of three quarters. 
  • DSU has a response to start the final period, using an 11-3 run to take a 53-51 lead at the media timeout with 4:54 to play. 
  • Montevallo would fight back to take the lead on a Kourtnie Smith layup to make it 55-54 with 4:06 to go. 
  • Erin Kate Richardson drilled a left corner three-pointer to give DSU a lead, 57-55, that put them ahead for the rest of the contest and helped seal the road victory for the Lady Statesmen.
 

NOTABLES:
 
  • Alexis Ross scored a tallied a career-high 18 points.
  • Rush went 2-for-4 from three-point territory, giving her 144 career three-pointers. She needs just seven more treys to pass Amber Gean (2001-2005) for fourth in that category. She is fifth in school history with 435 career three-point attempts.
  • The Lady Statesmen knocked off the Falcons in their first game back in Montevallo since a 60-55 win back on Dec. 30, 2009.

  • The Lady Statesmen travel to Memphis, Tenn. on Wednesday, Feb. 14 to take on Christian Brothers at Canale Arena at 5 p.m.
