GAME NOTES: Lee Flames Visit Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss. - After overcoming two separate four-point deficits in the final 15 seconds of a 55-53 Valentine's Day win over Christian Brothers, the Delta State University men's basketball team welcomes Lee to Walter Sillers Coliseum on Sat. Feb. 17 at 4p.m.

LAST TIME OUT:

  • STATESMEN DOWN CBU IN DRAMATIC FASHION: The Statesmen edged CBU 55-53 at Canale Arena on Valentine's Day, overcoming two separate four-point deficits in the game's final 15 seconds. Brett Warner hit a three-pointer with four seconds left to pull within one 53-52, and PJ Davis hit three free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining to put DSU ahead 55-53. Delta State clinched a GSC tournament berth with the win.

ABOUT DELTA STATE:

  • STATESMEN DEFENSE ANCHORS THE SQUAD: Delta State leads the way in the Gulf South Conference in scoring defense, giving up 63.8 points per game. The Statesmen are ranked 6th in the NCAA in that category. Alaska Anchorage sits in fifth just ahead of DSU, giving up 63.6 points per game. Point Loma (64.0), Hillsdale (64.2) and Gannon (64.6) are just behind DSU in scoring defense. 
  • DAVIS DOING HIS PART: Senior forward PJ Davis continues to help spearhead offensive and defensive attacks. The Cleveland, Miss. product is  averaging 16.5 points per game, 6.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. Davis leads the team in rebounding (158 total - 60 Off., 98 Def.) and blocks (38), and is tied for second in the GSC in blocks per game (1.5).
  • DAVIS, WARNER CLIMBING THE CHARTS: PJ Davis and Brett Warner continue to etch themselves into the Delta State record books. Davis sits in 10th all-time in scoring, tallying 1,274 career points. He needs just five points to pass Don Cooper (1970-1972), who sits in 9th. Davis has climbed into the top 10 in career rebounding, as he sits tied with Devin Schmidt and Norris Ashley for 7th with 713 career boards. He needs seven rebounds to pass Mark Easley (1982-1983) for 6th all-time. Davis has played in every game since his freshman year, totaling 117 games played, which ties him for 5th place with Twentis McGee (1995-1998). Davis' 192 blocks is a school record and ranks 4th all-time in the GSC. He needs four more to pass Jon Rogers (195 blocks for Valdosta State from 2002-2006) for third place in GSC history. He is also 10th in made field goals (506), 8th in made free throws (250) and 7th in free throws attempted (366). Warner is 7th in school history in three-pointers made (131) and ranks 5th in school history in three-point field goals attempted (372). 

ABOUT LEE:
  • LEE LOOKING FOR SEASON SWEEP: The Flames knocked off the Statesmen 62-53 back on Jan. 18 at Paul Dana Walker Arena, and will clash with DSU for the 10th time in the series. Lee was led by Colton Blevins' 20 points in 23 minutes, and nine different Flames scored at least two points.
  • FLAMES LOOKING TO LOCK UP A TOURNEY BERTH: The Flames come in with a 14-11 record and a 9-9 record in Gulf South Conference play. Lee is currently tied for the sixth spot in the standings, knotted up with North Alabama and Montevallo. Lee has a win over North Alabama in tiebreaker situations, but dropped a 68-67 game against Montevallo. 
  • BLEVINS, MONTGOMERY FUEL THE FIRE: Colton Blevins and Ryan Montgomery lead a balanced Lee team. The Flames have seven players averaging more than six points per game, led by Blevins 10 points per game. Blevins adds a 4.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists, and Montgomery adds 9.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per night for Lee.
