CLEVELAND, Miss. – Zack Shannon went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs to rally top ranked Delta State University (8-1) past Mississippi Valley State University (0-1), 10-5, on Tuesday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.
Brian Lane and Casey also hit home runs as the Statesmen plated nine straight runs to rally from a 3-0 deficit.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Mississippi Valley scored three runs to take a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Willie Johnson had an RBI single and after the second run scored on a ground out, Kanalkai Gaughen doubled home the third run.
- The Statesmen scored three in the fifth and one in the sixth to erase the deficit and take a 4-3 lead. Zack Shannon doubled with the bases loaded, scoring Jason Popovich and Emil Ellis in the fifth. Brian Lane scored on relay throw from right field. Josh Russell was hit by a pitch and scored on a Nick Morgan single to left in the sixth.
- Three home runs highlighted a five run seventh inning that grew the Statesmen lead to 8-3. Ellis singled and scored on a Lane home run to left. Shannon and Clay Casey followed Lane with solo home runs. Juwan Burney singled and came home on a Popovich single to left field.
- A Joncarlos Aponte two-RBI double in the eighth cut the Statesmen lead to 9-5.
- Shannon launched his second solo home run in the eighth to make the score 10-5.
ON THE MOUND:
- Jonathan Lindsey (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings, giving up one hit with two strikeouts to earn the win
- Brandon Hawkins (0-1) gave up four runs on three hits with a strikeout to suffer the loss MVSU.
- Popovich made his first appearance of the season, working a scoreless ninth to close the game.
NOTEABLES:
- The Statesmen have scored nine-plus runs in five games this year and have recorded double digit hits in eight-of-nine games this season.
- Shannon's two home runs moved his GSC leading total to five and his career total to 24, one away from breaking into the top 10 on the DSU career home run list.
- Shannon finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs and Ellis was 3-for-5 with two runs scored to lead the Statesmen at the plate.
- Juwan Burney had two hits and Lane had two hits with a two-run home run.
