Statesmen comeback twice to sweep Blazers

VALADOSTA, Ga. –  No. 1/6 Delta State University baseball (10-1, 2-0 GSC) posted a pair of comeback Gulf South Conference wins, sweeping a doubleheader from Valdosta State University (6-7, 0-2 GSC), 13-11 (11 innings) and 7-6 in the nightcap on Saturday at Billy Grant Field.
 
The Statesmen trailed 5-1 in game one before rallying for a 13-11 win in 11 innings and rallied back from a 5-0 deficit to earn a 7-6 in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM1)
  • The Statesmen took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Brian Lane delivered a two out single and scored on a Zack Shannon triple to centerfield.
  • Valdosta State scored the next five runs, scoring three runs in the third and two in the fifth to build a 5-1 lead. Andrew Williams walked with the bases loaded and Elias Macias had a two-run double in the third while two runs scored on a throwing error in the fourth.
  • The Green-and White rallied for two runs in the eighth and six in the ninth to take a 9-5 lead. Josh Russell singled in a run while the second run scored on a Nick Morgan sac-fly in the eighth.
  • Clay Casey doubled to left center with the bases loaded to start the scoring in the ninth followed by a Jamell Newson RBI single to center and a Justin Nussbaum two-RBI single.
  • The Blazers scored four in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game 9-9 and force extra innings. Luke Suchon had an RBI single and after a run scored on a fielder's choice and BJ White double in the tying runs.
  • Jason Popovich led off the 11th inning with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch. Ellis and Newson were hit by a pitches with Ellis scoring on a Casey sac-fly and Newson coming home on a wild pitch. Nussbaum singled home Nick Morgan, who doubled, to give the Statesmen an 13-9 lead.
  • The Blazers cut the lead to 13-11 on an Andy Naughton two-run home run before Peyton White got a foul out and a strikeout looking to end the game.
 
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
  • Peyton White (1-0) tossed 2.2 innings in relief, allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk to get the win
  • Cooper Cain (1-1) suffered the loss for VSU, giving up four runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
  • The Blazers plated three runs in the first and two runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Haughton hit a three-run home run to left in the first inning and BJ King hit a two-run home run to left in the second.
  • Two runs crossed the plate in the fourth to trim the Blazers' lead to 5-2. Lane doubled and Shannon reached on an error to start the inning. A wild pitch advanced Lane to third before scoring when Shannon reached on an error. Morgan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Shannon.
  • Suchon doubled home King in the fourth to push the VSU lead to 6-2.
  • A four-run fifth inning tied the game 6-6. Lane, Shannon, Casey and Juwan Burney singled to start the rally. Lane scored on Casey's single and Shannon scored from third after Ellis was hit by a pitch. Casey scored on a wild pitch and Burney came home on a Morgan sac-fly.
  • The Statesmen scored the go ahead run in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead. Casey doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Casey scored when Ellis struck out swinging but reached first on a passed ball.
  • The Blazers put the tying and winnings runs in scoring position in the seventh but reliever Tyler Walton struck out Macias looking to end the game.
 
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
  • Walton (2-0) earned the win in relief of starter Dalton Minton for the Statesmen. Walton tossed three scoreless innings, scattering five hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
  • Logan Elliott (0-2) was the pitcher of record for the Blazers, allowing a run on two hits with three strikeouts in one inning pitched.
 
NOTEABLES
  • The 13 runs in game one marked the sixth time the Statesmen have scored nine or more runs and the 16 hits were the ninth double-digit hit game this season.
  • The 16 hits in game second most this season, falling five shy of the season high of 21 versus Nova Southeastern (2.3.18).
  • Shannon finished 4-for-6 with a triple, two doubles and one RBIs while Casey had three RBIs to lead the Statesmen in game one.
  • Ellis, Russell, Morgan, Newson and Nussbaum had two hits apiece in game one.
  • Lane went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored and Casey was 2-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Statesmen in game two.
  • The two comebacks were the third straight comeback for the Statesmen.
  • The Statesmen have won the last three meetings with the Blazers by a combined score 39-34, all come from behind wins for DSU.
  • Head coach Mike Kinnison notched career win number 907 (907-289-2).
