Delta State, Lee Clash on Super Tuesday

CLEVELAND, Miss. - After closing the regular season with an overtime win over Mississippi College, the Delta State University men's basketball team travels to Cleveland, Tenn. to take on the Lee University Flames on Feb. 27 on Super Tuesday, the first round of the Gulf South Conference tournament.

ABOUT DELTA STATE:

  • STATESMEN IN THE GSC TOURNAMENT: The Statesmen are the fifth-seed in this year's GSC tournament, and make the field for the 10th consecutive season, including each of the last six seasons under Jim Boone. DSU has made the GSC playoffs 32 times in school history, and is 29-27 all-time in the tournament. The Statesmen defeated Shorter 93-85 at Sillers Coliseum before falling to Alabama Huntsville in Birmingham 85-67 in the second round a year ago.
  • DEFENSE ANCHORS THE SQUAD: Delta State leads the way in the Gulf South Conference in scoring defense, giving up 63.5 points per game. The Green-and-White are ranked sixth in the NCAA in that category this season.
  • DAVIS DOING HIS PART: Senior forward PJ Davis continues to help spearhead the offensive and defensive attacks. The Cleveland, Miss., product is averaging 16.3 points per game, 6.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.4 blocks per game. Davis leads the team in rebounding (176 total - 65 Off., 111 Def.) and blocks (40), and is third in the GSC in blocks per game.

  • LEE SWEEPS SEASON SERIES FROM DSU: The Flames narrowly edged out the Statesmen 52-49 at Walter Sillers Coliseum on Feb. 17 to sweep the regular season series for the first time in the 10 games that the two teams have played. Lee already owns a home win over Delta State, beating the Statesmen 62-53 on Jan. 18 at Paul Dana Walker Arena. 
  • TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY: Despite a 16-11 overall record, the Flames have been very tough on visiting teams in Cleveland, Tenn. Lee sports an 11-4 record at Paul Dana Walker arena, boasting wins over Delta State, Christian Brothers, Alabama Huntsville and nationally ranked West Florida. 
  • BLEVINS, MONTGOMERY FUEL THE FLAMES: Colton Blevins and Ryan Montgomery lead an extremely balanced Lee team. The Flames have seven players averaging more than six points per game, led by Blevins 10.7 points per game. Blevins adds a 4.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists, and Montgomery totals 10.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per contest for Lee.
