Lane, Statesmen Reel In Sailfish, 10-5

JUPITER, Fla. – Senior Brian Lane went 4-for-6 with five RBIs and a grand slam to lead No. 1 Delta State University (2-1) to a 10-5 win over Palm Beach Atlantic University (1-2) on Sunday at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Jason Popovich singled, Jamell Newson walked and Brian Lane singled to load the bases with no outs in the first. Popovich scored on a Clay Casey sac-fly with one out before a fly out ended the frame
  • Riley Herold hit a home run to left in the second to tie the game 1-1.
  • The Statesmen scored three runs in the third and four in the fourth to build the lead to 8-1. Newson singled and Lane doubled to lead off the Statesmen half of the third before coming home on Zack Shannon home run to left field. Lane belted a grand slam home run with Bradley Sanford, Justin Nussbaum and Popovich aboard on free passes in the fourth.
  • The Sailfish scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to cut the Statesmen lead in half, 8-4. Eddie Vicinanza had a two-RBI single in the fourth and Evan Dougherty hit a solo home run in the fifth.
  • The Statesmen scored a run in the sixth and seventh innings both with two outs to extend the lead to 10-5. Casey hit a two-out double and scored on an Emil Ellis single in the sixth. Popovich singled and scored on a Lane two-out single up the middle.
 
ON THE MOUND:
  • Statesmen reliever Tyler Walton (1-0) pitched 2.1 innings allowing one run on two hits to earn his first win.
  • Peyton White threw the final three innings, allowing a run on one hit with a strikeout to record his first save.
  • Delta State starter Dalton Minton made his first start on the mound, allowing three runs on seven hits with a strikeout in 3.2 innings.
  • Johnnie Schneider (0-1) gave up eight runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and four walks to take the loss for the Sailfish.
 
NOTEABLES:
  • Mike Kinnison notched win number 899 and needs one win for his 900th career win.
  • Shannon's three-run home run in the third was his first of the season and the 20th of his his career. The Cincinnati native finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
  • Lane tied a career-high with four hits and set a new career-high with five RBIs while also notching his fourth career home run.
  • Popovich notched his third straight multi-hit game and the 31st of his career.
  • Ellis collected two hits and Casey also had two hits including a double.
  • Bradley Sanford, a native of Grenada, Miss., made his first career start behind the plate for the Statesmen. Sanford drew a walk and scored a run in the fourth frame.
  • The Statesmen scored double-digit runs and hits for the second straight day, tallying 31 runs and 36 hits.
