Delta State vs. UWA/UM |
ABOUT DELTA STATE:
- DAVIS DOING HIS PART: Senior forward PJ Davis continues to help spearhead offensive and defensive attacks. The Cleveland, Miss. native is averaging 15.9 points per game, 6.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. Davis leads the team in rebounding (143 total - 53 Off., 89 Def.) and blocks (34), and ranks third in the GSC in blocks per game (1.5).
- DAVIS, WARNER CLIMBING THE CHARTS: PJ Davis and Brett Warner are both etching themselves into the Delta State record books as the season progresses. Davis sits in 12th all-time in scoring, tallying 1,211 career points in his career. He is nine points away from passing Brad Longino (1990-1993), who sits in 11th with 1,219 points. Davis has climbed into the top 10 in school history in rebounding, as he sits in 10th with 698 career boards. He needs 16 rebounds to tie Devins Schmidt and Norris Ashely for 7th all-time. Davis has played in every game since his freshman year, totaling 114 games played and 62 starts, which ties him for 7th place. Davis' 188 blocks is a school record and 4th all-time in the GSC. He is also 10th in made field goals (480), 10th in made free throws (239) and 9th in free throws attempted (350). Warner is 7th in school history in three-pointers made (126) and ranks 5th in school history in three-point field goals attempted (359).
- STATESMEN DEFENSE ANCHORS THE SQUAD: Delta State leads the way in the Gulf South Conference in scoring defense, giving up 64.2 points per game. The Statesmen are also 10th in the NCAA in that category, just behind Mercyhurst and Hillsdale.
ABOUT WEST ALABAMA:
- INSTANT CLASSIC: The Statesmen and the Tigers played an instant classic just a couple of weeks ago, as UWA prevailed 66-65 at Walter Sillers Coliseum against the Green-and-White. With the Statesmen trailing by one with just seconds left, Cameron Monix had a driving layup attempt that fell just off the iron as the Tigers slipped out of Cleveland with the win. Josh Fleming had 28 points and eight rebounds to lead the way for UWA.
- EATON, FLEMMING PACE POTENT TIGER OFFENSE: Charles Eaton and Josh Fleming, West Alabama's two leading scorers, have the Tigers in third place in the GSC standings at 11-4. Eaton, a four time GSC player of the week this season, paces the Tigers and the league in scoring at 27.3 points per game. Eaton is also the leading scoring in league play, averaging 27 per night in GSC action. Josh Fleming, a junior transfer from West Haven, Conn., is the second leading scorer for the Tigers, pouring in 16.0 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists per night.
- WEST ALABAMA NEAR PERFECT AT HOME: Head coach Allen Sharpe's squad has won nine of their first 10 games at home this season, with their lone setback coming Jan. 6 at home in a three-point loss to Shorter. The Tigers have won their last three games at home, and return to Pruitt Hall after a four-game swing through the state of Alabama.
ABOUT MONTEVALLO:
- STATESMEN DEFENSE SUFFOCATES FALCONS: Last time out, the Delta State defense smothered the Falcons at Walter Sillers Coliseum, holding Montevallo to a season-low 38 points. UM shot less than 36 percent for the game and struggled offensively all evening. Brett Warner led the way with 22 points for DSU, while Chris Williams and Tyler Brough each had 11 points for the Falcons.
- UM ENJOYS FRIENDLY CONFINES OF TRUSTMARK ARENA: Playing on the road has not been kind to the Falcons thus far this season, but they have enjoyed playing in front of their home crowd at Trustmark Arena. Montevallo is 8-3 at home this season, including wins over Alabama Huntsville and Christian Brothers.
- WILLIAMS DOING IT ALL FOR THE FALCONS: Chris Williams has done everything for head coach Danny Young. He has averaged 16.1 points per game, 5.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game for the Purple-and-White, including scoring 24 or more points in his last three games for UM.
UP NEXT:
After visiting West Alabama and Montevallo, the Statesmen travel up to Memphis to take on Christian Brothers on Valentine's Day. The Statesmen and the Bucs will face off at Canale Arena on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
