Lady Statesmen Fall 63-60 in Heartbreaker at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama outscored the Delta State University women's basketball team 30-9 in the fourth quarter, overcoming a 20-point second half deficit to knock off the Lady Statesmen and sweep the season series from the Green-and-White in Gulf South Conference action on Thursday night at Pruitt Hall.

TURNING POINT:
 
  • The Tigers outscored the 47-28 in the second half, including 30-9 in the final stanza, to steal their ninth victory in GSC action.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • Delta State got 19 points from Takisha Jordan and 15 points from Alondrea Rush to lead the way offensively. 
  • DSU shot 19-for-50 (38 percent) for the contest, including a 6-for-11 mark (55 percent) from three point land. They also added a 16-for-26 mark (62 percent) from the foul line.
  • UWA went just 21-for-60 from the floor (35 percent), 4-for-14 from three (29 percent) and 17-for-28 from the free throw line (61 percent).
  • West Alabama outrebounded Delta State 42-37 for the contest, including 18-11 on the offensive glass.
  • The two teams combined for 34 turnovers. DSU scored 18 points off 16 UWA turnovers, and UWA scored 21 points off 18 DSU turnovers.
  • Chloe Culpepper scored a team-high 17 points to lead the way for West Alabama. Kim Parrish (13) and Peyton Parker (10) each added double-digits. 

 INSIDE THE FLOW:
 
  • Both teams played the opening six minutes within one possession of each other, but the Lady Statesmen closed out the last 3:59 of the opening stanza on a 9-4 run to take a 17-13 lead after one quarter.
  • Erin Kate Richardson knocked down a pair of early three-point baskets, helping Delta State shoot 60 percent (3-for-5) from downtown in the opening period. 
  • DSU opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run, sparked by layup from Alexis Ross, a pair of jumpers from Takisha Jordan and another trey from Richardson, to take a 23-13 lead. 
  • On the defensive end, Delta State held the Tigers scoreless for a 10:41 stretch, from the 2:33 mark of the first quarter to the 1:52 mark of the second quarter, to take a 32-16 lead into the halftime intermission. 
  • The Lady Statesmen held UWA to just three second quarter points and a dysmal 21 percent shooting (6-for-28) in the first half.
  • UWA used an 8-2 run to cut the Green-and-White lead down to ten, 34-24, with 7:18 to go in the third quarter. 
  • DSU responded by running out to their largest of the game, 20 points, with a 14-4 run to take a 48-28 lead with 2:11 left in the third. 
  • Delta State outscored the Tigers 17-9 over the final seven minutes of the third to take a 51-33 lead into the fourth. 
  • The Tigers opened the fourth on a 14-0 run, cutting the lead down to four points at 51-47 with 5:04 to play. 
  • DSU pushed the lead back to 11 points with 1:50 to go, but UWA continued to claw back. They outscored the Lady Statesmen 13-3 the rest of the way, including 11-0 in the last 40 seconds, to steal the win in front of a packed house. 
 

NOTABLES:
 
  • Jordan led all scorers with 19 points. She also pulled down six rebounds and dished out five assists while scoring in double-figures for the 18th time in her 21 games played this season.
  • Raven Johnson tied her career-high with 11 rebounds.  
  • Alondrea Rush went 3-for-6 from three-point territory, and sits at 430 career attempts (fifth in school history) and 142 makes, which moves her into fifth all-time, moving past Shawanna Wright. Wright knocked down 140 three-pointers from 1997-2000.

  • The Lady Statesmen travel to Montevallo to take on the Falcons on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. at Trustmark Arena in Gulf South Conference action.
