Lady Statesmen Set for Road Series at West Alabama

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- After the threat of rain altered its weekend schedule, the Delta State University softball team is scheduled to travel to Livingston, Ala., for a three-game Gulf South Conference series against West Alabama. The series is set to begin with a 5 p.m. CT doubleheader on Thursday, March 15 and will conclude with a single game at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 16.

THE FIRST PITCH - TOP STORYLINES THIS WEEK
  • The Lady Statesmen (12-14, 5-7 GSC) are scheduled to travel to Livingston, Ala., (7-18, 3-9 GSC) to face West Alabama for a three-game Gulf South Conference series. Last week the Lady Statesmen dropped two-of-three games to West Georgia, while UWA suffered the same fate at Auburn Montgomery.
  • Mallory Myers, who has hit safely in all but six games this season, leads the team with a .322 batting average. The Batesville, Miss., native also leads the team with seven multi-hit games, and ranks second on the team with 15 runs. 
  • Junior Kelly Byrd has been a major contributor in the middle of the DSU lineup. The Jones JC leads the team with five home runs, two triples, five doubles, 22 RBIs, a .648 slugging percentage and 12 hit by pitch. Byrd is also tied for the team lead with 16 runs. Her 12 hit by pitch also lead the GSC. DSU is 10-1 when Byrd drives in at least one run.
  • The Lady Statesmen pitching staff ranks fourth in the GSC with a 3.12 ERA. Opponents are batting just .260 against DSU, which is fifth-best in the league.

 
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS:
  • UWA enters the series with DSU 7-18 with a 3-9 mark in GSC play. Freshman Nicole Buccieri leads the Tigers with a .328 batting average, including five doubles and seven RBIs. Audrey Diekmann leads the Tigers with 13 RBIs. Andrea Edmonds (2-6) leads the UWA pitching staff with 51 innings pitched. Freshman pitcher Kamree Lay leads the team with 31 strikeouts.
