Lady Statesmen Open Home Slate With Auburn Montgomery

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University softball team is scheduled to open its 2018 home schedule when it hosts Auburn Montgomery, for a three-game Gulf South Conference series, beginning
on Saturday, March 3.

THE FIRST PITCH - TOP STORYLINES THIS WEEK
  • The Lady Statesmen are scheduled to host Gulf South Conference debutant Auburn Montgomery for a three-game GSC series. AUM is in its first full year as a member of the league, but not eligible for postseason play. Saturday's doubleheader will be the first games of the year for the Lady Statesmen inside the friendly confines of University Field. In its last contest, DSU starting pitcher Taylor Johnson allowed just two hits in a 2-0 victory over No. 20 Valdosta State. The shutout marked the first time in 49 games that the Blazers have failed to score.
  • LSU-Alexandria transfer Kaitlyn Eaves leads the Lady Statesmen with a .345 batting average. She also ranks second on the team with a .424 on base percentage. Eaves has struck out just one time in 29 at-bats.
  • Olivia Dick ranks second on the team with a .326 batting average, with a double and four RBIs. The sophomore has a base hit in seven of the last nine games. She is also tied for the team lead with six stolen bases.
  • Senior Taylor Johnson leads the team with a 5-3 record and a 1.41 ERA. The Long Beach, Miss., native has not allowed an earned run in her last 22 innings. Johnson has also allowed just 13 hits in her last 22 innings.
  • The Lady Statesmen pitching staff ranks fifth in the GSC with a 2.28 ERA. Opponents are batting .253 against DSU, which is sixth best in the leage.
  • Through 18 games, the Lady Statesmen have 127 hits, which ranks fifth in the GSC. Of those 112 hits, 31 (27 percent) are for extra bases. DSU leads the league with 29 hit by pitch, and is tied for second with 19 sacrifice bunts.
  • Junior Kelly Byrd has been a major contributor in the middle of the DSU lineup. The Jones JC transfer leads the GSC with eight hit by pitch, is tied for second in the league with two triples, tied for third in home runs (4) and RBIs (17) and is tied for fifth with four doubles.
ABOUT AUBURN MONTGOMERY

AUM is 6-4 on the season with a 3-3 mark in GSC play. The Warhawks are coming off a 2-1 series loss to Alabama Huntsville this past weekend, winning the series opener on Friday evening 5-4 before falling twice on Saturday 4-1 and 7-2 in a doubleheader.
 
This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
 
Hannah Dailey leads AUM, hitting .440 on the season with 11 hits and eight RBIs.

Sophomore pitcher Chanel Newcomer  leads the team in strikeouts with 21 and innings pitched(28).  Newcomer is 3-3 on the season with a save over eight appearances, with a 3.25 ERA.
