No. 1 Statesmen Fall At No. 30 UAM

MONTICELLO, Ark. - Jordan Johnson and Brady Weiss combined for 10 RBIs to lead No. 30 University of Arkansas-Monticello (17-7, 12-3 GAC) to a 17-9 win over No. 1/2 Delta State University (19-3, 10-1 GSC) on Tuesday at Weevils Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen scored three runs without the benefit of a hit to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Jason Popovich led off with a walk and scored when Zack Shannon reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Emil Ellis walked and scored on a Nick Morgan walk and Shannon came home on a Tyler Brown walk.
  • Brady Weis walked and scored on a Dylan Borman infield single to cut the DSU lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the first.
  • UAM scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-3 lead. Weiss and Brian Ray had RBI singles and Sean Wagner got a run home when he reached on a fielder's choice.
  • Delta State tied the game in the top of the third. Josh Russell reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Popovich sac-fly to left field.
  • UAM took a 6-4 lead on a Weiss RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the third.
  • The Green-and-White tied the game 6-6 in the fourth. Lane walked and came home on a Shannon two-run home run to left field.
  • UAM got a run in the fourth and seven in the sixth inning to take a 14-6 lead. Borman singled and scored on a Jordan Johnson single to right in the fourth. Johnson belted a three-run home run and Weiss hit a two-run home run to highlight the seven-run sixth.
  • UAM pushed the lead to 15-6 on a Johnson RBI single that scored Borman, who had a one-out single.
  • The Statesmen loaded the bases in the eighth but only managed to score two runs to cut the lead to 15-8
  • Garrett Dodd hits a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to give UAM a 16-8 lead.
  • Lane closed the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to make the score 17-9.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Conner Wilkerson (1-0) tossed three-scoreless innings against one hit, striking out one and walking two to pick of the win for UAM
  • Peyton White (3-1) gave up seven runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work to suffer the loss in relief of starter Hayden Davey.
 
NOTABLES
  • Casey led the Statesmen with two hits while Shannon drove in three runs and Popovich had two RBIs.
  • Shannon's two-run home run in the fourth tied him with Devin Goodwin (2006-09) for fourth on the DSU career home runs list with 37. It also moved him into fifth on the school's single-season home runs list with 18.
  • The Statesmen put 19 runners on base by a combination of 13 walks and six hit-by-pitch.
  • The Statesmen left 15 runners on base, went 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and went 0-for-6 with the bases loaded.
  • Statesmen pitchers yielded a season-high 17 runs on 20 hits.
