Lady Statesmen Welcome Shorter for GSC Series

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University softball team is scheduled to continue its eight-game homestand when it welcomes Shorter for a three-game Gulf South Conference series. The teams are scheduled for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 24 and a single game on Sunday, March 25 at 1 p.m.

THE FIRST PITCH - TOP STORYLINES THIS WEEK
  • The Lady Statesmen (15-16, 6-9 GSC) are scheduled to host their second Gulf South Conference series of the season when they host Shorter. DSU is fresh off a doubleheader sweep of former GSC member Arkansas Monticello, while Shorter took two-of-three from West Georgia. Last season, the Lady Statesmen took two-of-three from Shorter.
  • Over her last eight games, junior Kelly Byrd has seen her average rise 68 points to a team-best .354. Byrd has collected 13 hits in her last 26 at-bats, including a double, a triple, four home runs and nine RBIs. The Terry, Miss., native is tied for the GSC lead with eight home runs, is tied for fourth in RBIs (27) and ranks second with 12 hit by pitch.
  • Freshman Madison Bigner smacked her first collegiate home run in the 7-4 win over Monticello. The Summit, Miss., native is seven of her last 17, including two hits in three of the last six games. Bigner is also 3-0 in the circle with a 4.22 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 32 innings.
  • Marissa Landrum leads the Lady Statesmen with a .378 average in GSC contests. In league games, the South Alabama transfer has collected 17 hits in 45 at-bats, and has a .404 on base percentage. Landrum is also tied for second on the team with six stolen bases.
  • The Lady Statesmen pitching staff ranks seventh in the GSC with a 3.40 ERA. Opponents are batting .268 against DSU, which is tied for sixth in the league. Taylor Johnson leads DSU with a 6-7 record with a 3.70 ERA. She also leads the Lady Statesmen with 65.2 innings pitched, while striking out 31 and walking 17. 
  • With the 7-4 victory over Arkansas Monticello on Tuesday, March 20, coach Casey Bourgoyne Charles earned her 250th career victory.
 
ABOUT SHORTER
  • Shorter (12-13, 7-7) is 3-7 in its last 10 contests, but claimed two games against West Georgia in its last series.
  • Tiffany Holland leads the Lady Hawks with a .370 batting average, while Taylor Martin leads the team with 16 RBIs. Martin is batting .395 in GSC contests.
  • Payton Lippert leads the Shorter pitching staff with a 6-4 mark and a 3.12 ERA. She also paces the Lady Hawks with 54 strikeouts in 67.1 innings.
  • Shorter ranks 12th in the GSC with a .270 batting average. The Lady Hawks pitching staff ranks ninth with a 4.23 ERA and 12th with a .312 batting average against.
