Tennis Set for MC and Jackson State

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State men's and women's tennis teams will travel to in-state rival Mississippi College for a Gulf South Conference match on Wednesday, March 7, at 2 p.m. and Jackson State University for a match on Friday, March 9, at 3 p.m. in Jackson, Miss.
 
"Last weekend was tough, but credit needs to be given to William Carey," said Jeffrey Farris, head coach for the Delta State men's and women's tennis teams. "I am proud of the effort both teams gave. We are playing two tough teams this week before we open home play on Sunday against UNA, so our focus is on preparing for MC and Jackson State."
 
DSU AT MC MATCH NOTES:
  • William Carey snapped a four-matching winning streak for the Statesmen, but Delta State enters Wednesday's match with an undefeated record in Gulf South Conference action.
  • The Choctaws are 4-4 overall, but have yet to win a GSC match. They enter Wednesday's contest coming off a 5-4 loss to UNA.
  • Last season, MC defeated Delta State 7-2. Since the Choctaws and Statesmen renewed their rivalry in 2015, Mississippi College has won two out of the past three matches.
  • Mason Vice was the only Statesmen to earn a win in singles against the Choctaws last season.  
  • After dropping the past two matches, the Lady Statesmen are currently 10th in GSC standings.
  • The Lady Choctaws are currently 9-0 and undefeated in GSC competition. They enter Wednesday's match coming off an 8-1 win against UNA.
  • Last season, the Lady Choctaws swept the Lady Statesmen in a 9-0 match victory.
  • Since MC joined the GSC conference, the Lady Choctaws have won two of the past three contests against Delta State.
 
DSU AT JSU MATCH NOTES:
  • The Jackson State Tigers are currently 3-9.
  • Last season, the Tigers defeated the Statesmen 4-2. Joao Yamacita is the only returning Statesmen to have recorded a match victory in the two teams' last meeting.
  • The Jackson State Lady Tigers are 3-7.
  • In their last meeting, the Lady Tigers defeated Delta State 5-2. The Lady Statesmen won the doubles contest, but were defeated in singles play. Sarah Nash recorded Delta State's lone match win in the singles competition.
 
ALLEZ LE TERRIER:
  • Freshman Emile Le Terrier has dominated the competition at the No. 1 spot for the Statesmen.
  • A native of Paris, France, Le Terrier enters the season ranked No. 47 nationally in the Oracle/ITA Division II National Singles Rankings. He is the first Statesman since 2008 to earn a national ranking. Pascal LaPlace was the last Statesman to earn an ITA national ranking, finishing the 2008-09 season ranked No. 46 in DII.
 
NOTABLES:
  • The Statesmen are a perfect 3-0 against GSC competition this season and are sitting in second place in GSC standings.
  • Freshman Stedman Strickland remains undefeated in singles action with a five-match winning streak.
  • Yamacita was the only Delta State player to win in doubles and singles against William Carey.
 
UP NEXT:
The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will host GSC rival, the University of North Alabama, for their first home match of the season on March 11, at 10:00 a.m. in Cleveland, Miss.
