Softball Travels to West Georgia for GSC Series

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University softball team is scheduled to travel to Carrollton, Ga., for a three-game Gulf South Conference series against West Georgia. The series is set to begin with a 1 p.m. CT doubleheader on Friday, March 9 and conclude with a single game at Noon on Saturday, March 10.

THE FIRST PITCH - TOP STORYLINES THIS WEEK
  • The Lady Statesmen are scheduled to travel to Carrollton, Ga., to face West Georgia for a three-game Gulf South Conference series. On Tuesday, March 6, the Lady Statesmen split a non-conference double- header at No. 10 Harding. UWG claimed back-to-back 2-1 series victories against Mississippi College and Christian Brothers.
  • After going a combined 6-for-9 against Harding, including 4-for-5 in game one, Mallory Myers leads the team with a .333 batting average. The Batesville, Miss., native is tied for the team lead with 15 runs and ranks second on the team with a .393 on base percentage.
  • Junior Kelly Byrd has been a major contributor in the middle of the DSU lineup. The Jones JC leads the team with four home runs, three triples, 19 RBIs, a .619 slugging percentage and nine hit by pitch. Byrd is tied for the team lead with 15 runs and four doubles. Byrd's nine hit by pitch also leads the GSC.
  • Nicole Fullilove (3-1) has gotten a win in her last two starts. After allowing just two hits and going the distance in a 1-0 win over Auburn Montgomery, the Central Arkansas transfer got her second straight victory in the 10-3 win over Harding. Fullilove has allowed just four earned runs over her last 19.2 innings.
  • The Lady Statesmen pitching staff ranks fourth in the GSC with a 2.47 ERA. Opponents are batting just .245 against DSU, which is third best in the leage.
  • Through 23 games the Lady Statesmen have 162 hits. Of those 162 hits, 34 (21 percent) are for extra bases. The 162 hits are the fourth most in the GSC.


AGAINST THE OPPONENTS:
  • UWG enters the series with DSU 12-6 with a 5-4 mark in GSC play. Ashley Ellison leads the Wolves with a .426 batting average, including six doubles and 11 RBIs. Lexie Stohr leads the team with 23 RBIs, including six in a 12-2 victory over Christian Brothers on March 3. Danielle Easterly has a 2-2 record, but leads the team with a 0.68 ERA in 20.2 innings. Lexi Close (4-0) and Katie Foote (4-2) have made 12 combined starts pitched 69 innings.
