Casey, Shannon and Ellis Lead Sweep Of UNA

FLORENCE, Ala.  –  Clay Casey drove in five runs and Zack Shannon set the season home run record to help No. 5/10 Delta State University (35-7, 21-4 GSC) swept a doubleheader from No. 27 University of North Alabama (30-15, 18-10 GSC) on Saturday at Mike Lane Field. The Statesmen, who swept the three-game series, erased a 2-0 deficit to take a 5-2 win in game one and captured an 11-8 win in the nightcap.

Zack Shannon hit a home run in both games to set the single-season home runs record with 27, breaking the old mark of 26 held by Dee Haynes (1999).

Emil Ellis went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Juwan Burney added two hits for the Statesmen.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
  • The Lions scored a run in the second and one in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Brandt Holland singled and moved into scoring position after an error and sac-bunt, and scored when Davis Elliott grounded out in the second.
  • Kevin Brenning doubled and scored on a Kyle Hubbuch single in the third.
  • The Statesmen put up five runs on seven hits in the eighth to erase the deficit and take a 5-2 lead. Zack Shannon clubbed his record tying 26th home run of the season. Clay Casey and Matt Majeur followed with singles to set up a Nick Morgan two-run double. Justin Nussbaum singled home Morgan and a Brian Lane sac-fly plated Nussbaum.
  • Hunter Riggins walked a batter but struck out Ridge Watson looking to wrap up the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
  • Dalton Minton (6-1) worked 8.1 innings, yielding two runs, one earned, while recording strikeouts and walking five to earn the win. 
  • Riggins (4) worked a scoreless ninth with a strikeout and a walk to close his second straight game against the Lions.
  • Shane Priest (6-2), who carried a no-hitter through seven innings, struck out nine while giving up three runs on three hits to take the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
  • The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the top of first on a Ben Cooley RBI single.
  • Delta State used a four-run third to take a 4-1 lead. Brian Lane's sac-fly scored Nussbaum and Clay Casey hit a three-run home run.
  • UNA answered with four runs to take a 5-4 lead. A run scored on an error and Cooley hit a three-run home run.
  • The Green-and-White scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to regain an 8-5 lead. Josh Russell and Nussbaum came around on ane Ellis single in the fourth. Shannon and Casey hit back-to-back solo home runs in the fifth.
  • Tate Mathis worked a walk and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Delta State added three runs in the sixth to build an 11-6 lead. Ellis walked and after stealing second, scored on a Casey single. Shannon walked and scored on a Morgan single and Casey scored on a Juwan Burney single.
  • An RBI single by Mathis and an RBI groundout by Thomas cut the DSU lead to 11-8 in the bottom of the sixth.
  • The Lions put two runners on in the ninth but Jason Lott got a groundout and two strikeouts to end the frame.
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
  • Lott (1-1) tossed the final four innings to earn the win in relief of starter Seth Hougesen. Lott had four strikeouts and gave up three runs on six hits with a walk.
  • UNA starter Lane Wallace (6-5) gave up seven runs on eight hits with a strikeout. 
NOTABLES
  • Shannon clubbed two home runs in the doubleheader to give him 27 on the year, breaking Dee Haynes' (1999) single-season record of 26.
  • Shannon also tallied career-RBI number 167 passing Brian Rea (1997-2000) for ninth on DSU's all-time RBIs list.
  • Minton tossed a season-high 8.1 innings and tied a season-high with eight strikeouts.
  • Morgan had a two-run double while Popovich, Ellis and Majeur had singles in game one.
  • Casey went 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs and Ellis was 4-for-5 with two RBIs in game two.
  • Burney had a pair of singles and Shannon was 2-for-3 with a home run and an intentional walk.
  • The Statesmen won their sixth straight game and have won the last 10 games against the Lions.
