Statesmen Split Doubleheader With Choctaws

CLEVELAND, Miss.  –  Brian Lane's walk-off grand slam home run gave No. 5/7 Delta State University (37-8, 22-5 GSC) an 8-4 win in 11 innings over Mississippi College (29-14, 18-9 GSC) in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.

The Choctaws got a three-run home run from Blaine Crim en route to a 6-3 win in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
•    Mississippi College scored a run in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie. Ty Alderman walked and came home on a Brandon Broussard double to give the Choctaws a 1-0 lead.
•    Two runs crossed the plate in the sixth inning to push the MC lead to 3-0. Billy Cameron one-out double and scored on a Blaine Crim double. Crim later scored on a Hunter Wilson sac-fly to left.
•    The Green-and-White rallied for three runs in the eighth inning. Zack Shannon hit a two-run home run with Brian Lane on base. Clay Casey struck out but reached on a wild pitch before scoring on Nick Morgan's sac-fly to tie the game.
•    Mississippi College pushed a run across in the 11th to take a 4-3 lead. Wilson was hit by a pitch and moved around to third on a wild pitch and a sac-bunt. Wilson would come in to score when Hunter Sykes reached an error on a squeeze bunt attempt.
•    The Statesmen scored five runs in the bottom of the 11th to walk off with the 8-4 win. Josh Russell reached on a fielder's choice, Justin Nussbaum was hit by a pitch and Popovich walked to load the bases with one out. Pinch-hitter Payton Lane walked to score pinch runner David Herrington and tie the game. Brian Lane belted his seventh home to clear the bases and give the Statesmen the walk-off win.

ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
•    DSU starting pitcher Seth Birdsong (8-0) worked seven innings allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts against three walks.
•    MC starter Zack Ingram (4-0) gave up two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched.
•    Jason Lott (2-1) did not allow a hit but gave up a run with two strikeouts in two innings of relief to get the win.
•    Stephen Atkins gave up two runs on one hit in 1.1 innings to suffer the loss for MC.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
•    The Choctaws grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kyle Smith singled and scored on a Yancey sac-fly.
•    Delta State plated two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Popovich hit his third home run of the year to tie the game 1-1. Ellis singled and after a Shannon double, scored on a Casey sac-fly to put the Statesmen ahead.
•    Nussbaum walked and scored on an Ellis single down the left field line to extend DSU's lead to 3-1 in the second.
•    The Choctaws scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. Crim hit a three-run home run Barber and Cameron aboard to erase the 3-1 deficit in the fifth. Dylan Duplechain struck out but reached on a wild pitched and scored when Grant Barber reached on fielder's choice in the sixth.
•    A Broussard single to left scored Wilson in the top of the seventh to add a run to the MC total and stretch the lead to 6-3.

ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
•    Seth Hougesen (2-1) struck out two and gave up four runs on five hits with four walks to take in 4.1 innings pitched to as the pitcher of record for the Statesmen.
•    Tim Holloway (1-0) allowed one hit in one scoreless inning of work to pick up the win.
•    Shelby Craddock (2) allowed only one hit over two scoreless innings to record the save.

NOTABLES
•    Shannon belted a two-run home run in the eighth inning of game one to extend his season record to 28 home runs while notching the 47th of his career.
•    Shannon's two RBIs moved him past Marcus Van Every for fourth in single-season RBIs with 82. 
•    Lane's walk-off grand slam in game one was the seventh grand slam this season by the Statesmen. 
•    Lane finished 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs and Shannon was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Statesmen at the plate in game one.
•    Lane has been hit by a pitch a GSC leading 23 times this season.
•    Ellis went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Popovich was 2-for-3 with a home run in game two.

Delta State and Mississippi College close out the three-game series with a single game on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.
