Statesmen Route UAM In Seven Innings, 19-9

CLEVELAND, Miss. –  Nick Morgan, Emil Ellis and Justin Nussbaum drove in three runs apiece to lead No. 5/8 Delta State University (25-6, 14-3 GSC) to a 19-9 win over No. 19/17 Arkansas-Monticello (23-9, 17-4 GAC) on Tuesday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Arkansas-Monticello took a 1-0 lead in the second when Andres Rios walked and scored on a Dylan Dorman RBI single to left.
  • The Statesmen scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Zack Shannon singled, and Clay Casey walked to start the frame. Shannon scored on Matthew Majeur's RBI single to left and Casey scored on a Justin Nussbaum single to left. Nussbaum would come home on Nick Morgan sac-fly to right.
  • UAM pushed four runs across in the third to take a 5-3 lead. Brian Ray had an RBI double followed by Sean Wagner run-scoring single and a Rios two-run home run to left.
  • The Green-and-White answered with five runs in the bottom of the third to regain an 8-5 lead. Majeur, Russell and Morgan delivered RBI singles while a run came in on a wild pitch. Lane was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the final run of the inning.
  • The Boll Weevils struck for four runs in the fifth to retake the lead, 9-8. Ray hit a leadoff home run to right and Drake Rowton had a two-run double to tie the game 8-8. Dylan Borman delivered an RBI single to put the Boll Weevils in the lead.
  • Delta State scored four runs in the fifth 12-9 lead. Ellis reached on a fielding error and came home on a Shannon single and Casey tripled in two runs.Casey would score when Majeur reached on an error.
  • Two more runs scored in the sixth to pus the DSU lead to 14-9. Russel walked and Nussbaum singled up the middle to start the inning. Russell scored on an Ellis single and Nussbaum scored on an error.
  • The Statesmen tacked on five runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game under the NCAA Mercy Rule, 19-9. Nussbaum drove in a pair of runs with a single followed by an RBI double by Morgan and a two-run single by Ellis.
ON THE MOUND
  • Hunter Riggins (1-1) picked up the winning, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit with a strikeout.
  • Jared Libke (2-2) gave up four runs on four hits with a strikeout as the pitcher of record for the Boll Weevils.
NOTABLES
  • Nussbaum went 3-for-5 with three RBIs followed by and Morgan and Ellis with three RBIs.
  • Morgan, Shannon, Mejeur and Russell each had two hits.
  • Majeur went 2-for-5 with two-RBI singles in his second start in left field this season.  
  • The Statesmen improved to 22-2 when leading after six innings in the doubleheader.
  • The Statesmen 19 runs were the third most runs in a game this season and marked the 14th time the Statesmen plated double-digit runs in a game.
  • Delta State collected 15 hits for their 21st double-figure hit game of the season.
  • The Statesmen defeated their second straight ranked opponent by double-figure runs while improving to 8-2 against ranked opponents.
  • Brian Ray went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead UAM at the plate.
