JACKSON, Tenn. – The Delta State University men's basketball team won their fifth straight game in the month of January, 71-65 over the Union University Bulldogs on Thursday night.
Brett Warner led the Statesmen with 23 points in the victory. The Statesmen remain in first place in the Gulf South Conference standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Statesmen jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead behind buckets from Warner and Harper before Union went on an 11-5 run.
- Union hit four of their nine three point shots in the first five minutes to earn a six point lead.
- DSU answered with a 7-0 run capped off with a three pointer from Rashiede Bell to give DSU a 21-20 lead.
- In the first half was only 2-12 from beyond the arc with Matt Wilson 0-5. Bell was the only Statesmen to hit a three pointer in the first half.
- Late in the first half Armon Benford score four straight points to give DSU a four point lead which they held at halftime.
- After the 2:31 mark of the first half the Statesmen never relinquished the lead.
- The Statesmen opened the second half on a 5-0 run and didn't allow a point from the Bulldogs in the first four and half minutes.
- Benford and Cedric Harper both had multiple offensive rebounds to keep the ball in possession f the Green and White early in the second half.
- Cameron Burkett, Matthew Wilson and Warner all hit three point shots to break the game open 58-42.
- Union went on a 9-0 run to cut it to a 66-60 ball game and then Bell gets a three point play to push it back out to a 9 point lead.
- Brett Warner hit a couple free to ice the game with a minute to go.
TURNING POINT
- Over the last two minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second half, the Statesmen outscored the Bulldogs 22-4.
STAT OF THE GAME
- Delta State held Union without a field goal for the first 7:35 of the second half.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Warner scored 23 points moving past Brad Logino for 12th all-time in scoring with 1238 points. Next up on the list is Gerald Glass who had 1249 points in two years at Delta State.
- Benford led DSU in rebounds with 12 tying his career high. It is the third time in his career that he has secured 12 rebounds.
- There were 35 personal fouls in the game with 18 called on the Green and White.
