Lady Statesmen Fall Short At No. 7/9 Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – Despite Quantesha Patterson's 17 points and career-high 14 rebounds, the  No. 7/9 Union University women's basketball (16-1, 8-1 GSC) hld on for a 71-67 over the Delta State University women's basketball team (10-6, 5-4 GSC) on Thursday at Fred-Delay Gym.

The Lady Statesmen lead after all three quarters only to see the Bulldogs turn around a 55-52 deficit with a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter and take the lead for good.
 
Nia Johnson equaled Patterson with 17 points followed by Frederica Haywood with 14 points and Aliyah Herod added a career-high 10 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Patterson scored 10 of her 17 points in the first quarter to help the Lady Statesmen take a 17-14 lead going into the second quarter.
  • Patterson's layup with 1:24 left put DSU 17-9 only to see Union score the final five points of the opening quarter to trail by three.
  • Haywood had six points in the second quarter as the Lady Statesmen outscored UU 19-12.
  • Haywood's layup with 12 seconds to go gave the Lady Statesmen a 36-26 halftime lead.
  • Herod's 3-point play gave the Lady Statesmen their biggest lead at 41-30 two minutes into the third quarter.
  • Trailing 41-31, Union used a 6-0 run capped by a Miracle Gray basket to cut the deficit down to 41-37 with 6:30 left in the third.
  • Kennedy Childers made a pair of free-throws to close the third quarter scoring with DSU holding a slim 55-52 lead.
  • Union went on a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter and erase the DSU lead and take a 62-55 lead. Morgan Martin scored five points and got a 3-pointer from Tiffany Rechis and a Smith layup during the run.
  • Trailing 67-59, Haywood scored four points to lead a 6-0 DSU run charge that cut the deficit to 67-65 with 1:08 remaining in the final stanza.
  • Smith made two free throws to push the Bulldogs' lead to 71-67 lead with 14 seconds left to seal the win..

TURNING POINT
  • Trailing 55-52 at the end of the third quarter, the Bulldogs went on a 10-0 to take the lead for good before holding on for the win.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
  • Union made 23-of-30 free throws on the night including making 10-of-13 free throws in the fourth quarter.  

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Patterson collected her third double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to lead four Lady Statesmen in double figures.
  • Johnson had 17 points and tied a career-high with three steals.
  • Haywood had 14 points and six rebounds followed by  Herod's career-high 10 points.
  • The Lady Statesmen 36 points in the first half tied for second most points in the first half this season.
  • Jada Smith led the Union scoring with 19 points followed by Morgan Martin's 14 and Jada Perkins with 13.
