PREVIEW: Lady Statesmen Host Key Home Stand Against UAH, Lee

Game Notes: Delta State vs. Alabama Huntsville/Lee University (Jan. 24-26, 2019)

CLEVELAND, Miss. --
 Delta State University women's basketball (10-7, 5-5 GSC) begin a two-game home stand starting with the University of Alabama Huntsville (7-8, 5-4 GSC) on Thurs., Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m. before hosting Lee University (15-3, 9-1 GSC) on Sat., Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. at Walter Sillers Coliseum. 

The Lee game will feature two head coaches that have a combined 53 years of coaching experience and 1,090 wins. DSU Head Coach Craig Roden has 572 wins while Lee's Marty Rowe has 518 wins.

\ABOUT THE LADY STATESMEN: The Lady Statesmen are looking to snap a three-game losing skid when Alabama Huntsville visits to begin the home stand. Delta State lost a pair of road games to No. 7/9 Union University and Christian Brothers by a combined seven points last week after dropping a 69-60 decision at home to Valdosta State. The Green-and-White are 5th in the GSC in scoring (65.2) and field goal percentage (42.0) and rank 3rd in free throw percentage (70.9).  DSU ranks 5th in scoring defense (62.2), 6th in 3-point field goal percentage defense (28.6), 6th in turnover margin (0.71) and 7th in field goal percentage defense (40.1). Nia Johnson is 12th in the GSC in scoring (12.6 ppg.) and 20th in assists (2.0 apg.). Quantesha Patterson averages 12.1 points per game (15th GSC) and is shooting 61 percent from the floor (1st GSC). Federica Haywood leads the team with 8.8 boards per game (4th GSC) while Patterson follows with 7.1 rebounds per game (7th GSC). Alondrea Rush, who averages 10.1 points per game, is 11th in the GSC with 2.6 assists per game and Patterson is 3rd in the GSC in blocks (1.1)


UAH NOTES: The Chargers have won three of their last four games, following a 71-58 win over West Alabama on Jan., 17.  UAH is one game in front of the Lady Statesmen in the GSC standings with the two teams scheduled to meet again on Feb. 2 in Huntsville, Ala. Aryn Sanders (17.4) and Baylee Johnson (14.5) , who ranks 2nd and 6th in the GSC in scoring, leads four Chargers scoring in double figures.  Holly Harris (10.5) and Katie Speegle (10.2) follow Sanders and Johnson. Sanders' 8.3 rebounds per contest is 6th while Speegle's 7.2 norm ranks 8th in the GSC. The Chargers are averaging 68.3 points while allowing 67.3 points per game along with a plus-2.6 rebounding margin. 


LEE NOTES: Lee is tied for first the GSC standings with Union University heading into its game on Thurs., Jan. 24 at Mississippi College.  The Flames lead the League in 5 defensive categories including scoring defense (51.6), field goal percentage defense (33.8), 3-point field goal percentage defense (25.8), turnover margin (6.1) and steals (9.9).  On the offensive end, Lee is 1st in 3-point field goals made (8.3) and assist/turnover ratio (6.06) and ranks 3rd in scoring (71.6) and  field goal percentage (43.4).  Abby Burtram leads the LU scoring, averaging 14.1 points per game (7th GSC) while dishing out 2.7 assists (10th GSC). Haley Schubert ranks 19th in the GSC in scoring (11.2 ppg.) and  2nd in steals (2.6 spg). The Flames handed No. 7/9 Union University its only setback to date on Jan. 3 in Jackson, Tenn.

21325Lady Statesmen vs. UAH: This will be the 26th meeting all-time between UAH and the Lady Statesmen.  Delta State has won the last seven meetings after capturing a 67-60 win in Cleveland, Miss., on Jan. 2, 2018. Delta State owns a 20-5 record and an 11-0 mark at Walter Sillers Coliseum in the series. 

Lady Statesmen vs. Lee: The Flames hold a 6-4 lead in brief history of the series after sweeping the two regular season meetings in 2017-18. Lee claimed a 54-42 win at Walter Sillers on Feb. 17, 2018 in the last meeting. 

Records Watch:  Alondrea Rush scored 20 points against Christian Brothers to take over 29th on the Lady Statesmen career scoring chart with 1,109 points. The Horn Lake, Miss., native passed Pam Taylor (1,094 - 1988-91), Rhandi Ball (1,096 - 2012-2015), Theresa Perry (1,098 - 1992-95) and Vickie Jackson (1,100 - 1982-86). Rush needs 87 points to pass Amber Gean (1,195 - 2001-05) for 28th. Rush remains 3rd in career 3-pointers made (195) and attempted (578) and is 11 3-pointers to move into 2nd currently held by Lady Statesmen assistant coach Chelsey Rhoades (206 -2012-2015)

At The SILL: The Lady Statesmen are 5-2 at home this season, averging 67.4 points and shooting 41.9 percent from the floor. Quantesha Patterson averages 14.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while Nia Johnson  averages 13.3 points, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Frederica Haywood averages 10.4 boards per game, 3.4 offensive boards per game, and 2.1 assists. Ernesha Chatman dishes out 2.1 assists along with 2.5 steals and 7.7 points per game.
