UWG Holds Off Lady Statesmen, 65-59

CARROLLTON, Ga. – A final rally from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit came up short for Delta State University women's basketball (9-4, 4-2 GSC) falling to the University West Georgia (9-3, 4-2 GSC) 65-59 on Monday, Jan. 7, 2018 at The Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Lady Statesmen led 7-2 following an Alondrea Rush 3-pointer just under three minutes into the contest.
  • West Georgia went on an 11-0 run to build e 14-9 lead on a Zaria Bankston bucket with 1:25 left in the opening quarter.
  • Delta State scored the final four points of the first quarter to trim the UWG lead to 14-13 on an Ernesha Chatman shot with one second left.
  • Chatman knocked down two free throws to put the Lady Statesmen up 19-16 at the 7:00 mark of in the second quarter.
  • The Wolves went on a 7-0 run to forge back ahead 29-24 with 1:55 to go before halftime.
  • A Frederica Haywood rebound and put back cut UWG's advantage to 29-26 at intermission.
  • Delta State cut the deficit to 31-28 on a Quantesha Patterson jump shot two minutes into the third quarter.
  • Kilah Nixon gave UWG a 38-31 lead with 3:29 left in the third quarter before a 3-point play by Kirstin Brown cut the deficit to 38-34 with 3:02 to play.
  • Nixon would knock down a jumper at the third quarter buzzer to give the Wolves a 48-38 advantage going to the final period.
  • The Wolves claimed a 12-point lead with 6:10 remaining in the fourth when Aysha Harris made a shot in the paint.
  • Johnson scored six points during a late 8-0 run to get DSU within five, 62-57, with 1:06 left.
  • Two free throws by Lee Ashley with 19 seconds to play pushed the UWG lead to 64-57.
  • Johnson hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 64-59 with six seconds before UWG'sJessica Brown closed the scoring, sinking a free throw with five seconds to go.

  • West Georgia used a 7-0 run with 1:55 left in the second quarter to seize the lead for good, 29-24.

  • The Wolves shot 53 percent and took advantage of 13 Lady Statesmen turnovers in the second half
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
 
  • Rush scored five points to push her career points total to 1,075 points and needs three points to move into 33rd. Shawnna Wright (1997-2000) is currently third with 1,077 career points.
  • The Green-and-White fell to 4-2 on the road this season.
  • Rush went 1-of-2 from beyond the 3-point line to remain ranked third in career-pointers made (190).
  • Chatman led the Delta State scoring attack with 14 points followed by Johnson with 10.
  • Haywood had a team-high seven rebounds.
  • The Wolves have won the last three games in the series and trail the overall series 38-7.
