Statesmen Fall 74-58 To West Alabama

Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Delta State University Men's Basketball team dropped its second-straight Gulf South Conference contest on the road, as the University of West Alabama claimed a 74-58 victory on Monday, Nov. 25 at Pruitt Hall. It was the third consecutive win in the series for UWA.
 
The Tigers (5-2, 1-1 GSC) placed three players in double figures, led by Darron Johnson's 20 points. LaJuan Hardy recorded his 2nd triple-double of the year as well with 10 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
 
Keyshaun Street scored a team-high 20 points for the Statesmen (3-4, 0-2 GSC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Slow starts continued to hamper the Statesmen, as West Alabama built a 19-2 lead with 13:27 to play in the first half.
  • Eight minutes later, the Tigers held their largest lead of the half, 26-points, as DSU trailed 35-9 with 5:20 on the clock.
  • The Statesmen used a 14-7 run to cut the deficit to, 42-23, at the half.
  • UWA shot 50 percent (16-of-32) in the 1st half, including 33 percent (6-of-18) from 3-point range, while the Statesmen managed 40 percent (10-of-25) from the floor but just 25 percent from 3-point range on 3-of-12 attempts.
  • Darron Johnson led UWA and all scorers with 16 points with Ricky Dunnaway adding nine points.
  • Savvas Georgiadis and Keyshaun Street scored five 1st half points apiece to lead DSU.
  • Street scored eight of DSU's 17 points in the 2nd half to get the Statesmen to within 12, 52-40, with 10:30 to go in the game.
  • UWA answered with an 8-0 run to extend the lead back to 20, 60-40, with 8:37 on the clock.
  • The Tigers maintained their double-digit advantage over the final minutes of the contest for the victory.
  • DSU closed the night making 21-of-51 shots from the floor for 41.2 percent with UWA hitting on 30-of-65 (46.2 percent).          
 
STAT OF THE GAME
  • The Statesmen connected on 7-of-25 shots from 3-point range in the 16-point loss.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Monday's matchup was the 76th in the series on the hardwood between two of the Gulf South Conference's founding institutions. Delta State leads the all-time standings 43-33, but West Alabama has won the last three meetings between the clubs.
  • Airen Brooks joined Street in double-figures with 11 points and seven rebounds. Anderson McCoy handed-out a team-high six assists while scoring nine points.
