MONTICELLO, Ark. – The No. 10-ranked Delta State University baseball team (6-0) scored two early runs and got a solid pitching from the bull pen to earn a 2-1 win over The University Arkansas Monticello (1-3) on Wed., Feb. 13 at Weevils Field.
Darek Sargent and
David Herrington delivered RBI singles in the first and second innings to give the Statesmen and early 2-0 lead.
Relief pitchers
Cole Morgan,
Tyler Walton and
Tommy Childree combined to scatter three hits with three strikeouts over 6.2 scoreless innings to hold UAM the rest of the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Statesmen scored a run in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.
- Brett Young and David Herrington singled to start the first inning followed by a Darek Sargent single to bring home Young.
- Josh Russell walked and scored on a David Herrington single in the second inning.
- Arkansas Monticello got on the board in the third and had the tying run at third. John Mauldin doubled and later scored when Jordan Johnson reached an error to cut the lead to 2-1.
- fCole Morgan entered the game in the third in relief of starter Seth Hougesen with runners at second and third and one out. Morgan got Brodie Threat to fly out to left and Johnson was thrown out at the plate by Matt Majeur to end the third.
- UAM put the tying run in scoring position in the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings but could not take advantage.
- Closer Tommy Childree gave up a one-out double in the ninth but got a strikeout and a pop out to end the game
ON THE MOUND
- Hougesen (2-0) was credited with the win, striking out three and walking one while allowing one run on three hits over 2.1 scheduled innings.
- Connor Wilkerson (0-1) gave up two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts as the pitcher of record for UAM
- Morgan worked 3.2 solid innings in relief, registering three strikeouts against one walk and one hit.
- Walton allowed one hit in two scoreless relief innings.
- Childree (3) gave up a double in the ninth before getting a strikeout and pop out to earn the save.
NOTEABLES
- Herrington and Darek Sargent were 2-for-4 with an RBI apiece.
- Barlow and Young each had two hits and Majeur had one hit.
- The Statesmen left nine men on base, five in scoring position.
- UAM also left nine runners on base and stranded five in scoring position.
- The Statesmen start a season 6-0 for the first time since 2013.
