MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Josh Russell and
David Herrington combined for six hits and five RBIs to help the No. 10 Delta State University baseball team (7-0, 1-0 GSC) to an 8-1 win over the University of Montevallo (2-7, 0-1 GSC) on Fri., Feb. 15 at Johnson Field.
Russell went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs while Herrington was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Dalton Minton recorded six strikeouts and allowed one hit over five scoreless innings in his first start of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Statesmen scored three runs in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. Weber Herbison doubled down the right field line to score Darek Sargent and CJ Estave. Josh Russell singled home Matt Majeur, who walked.
- Two runs crossed the plate in the fifth to push the Statesmen lead to 5-0. Russell doubled and scored on a David Herrington single while Herrington scored when Sargent reached on a fielder's choice.
- Jason Cryar homered to center field to lead off the sixth and cut the DSU lead to 5-1.
- DSU reliever Kris Peet bounced back to record a fly out and two strikeouts to end the UM threat in sixth with a runner in scoring position.
- The Statesmen added three runs in the top of the ninth to take an 8-1 lead. Russell delivered a two-run double to left field with one out and Herrington beat out an infield single to score Russell.
ON THE MOUND
- Minton (1-0) allowed one hit and struck out six Falcons over 5 scoreless innings to earn the win.
- Chrit Rudkin (0-2) tossed 8.2 innings with 11 strikeouts while giving up eight runs on 12 hits to take the loss for UM.
- Peet gave a run on two hits with three strikeouts in two innings in relief of Minton.
- Tyler Walton and Patrick Hodges each had a strikeout in a scoreless inning of work.
NOTEABLES
- Russell finished the day 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs and Herington was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
- Herbison had a two-run double in the second and Sagent had an RBI when he reached on a fielder's choice.
