GAME NOTES: Lady Statesmen at Montevallo (2.28.19)
CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Delta State University women's basketball (16-9, 11-7 GSC) closes out the 2019 regular season against the
University of Montevallo (12-14, 8-11 GSC) on Thurs., Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. in Montevallo, Ala.
GSC TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS: The Lady Statesmen are fighting for the No. 4 seed and the right to host a GSC Tournament Super Tuesday game on Tuesday, March 5.
1. If the Lady Statesmen win they will be the No. 4 seed and host No. 5 Valdosta State on Tuesday at a time to be determined.
2. If the Lady Statesmen lose coupled with a Valdosta State loss, then DSU will host VSU.
3. If DSU loses and VSU wins, the Lady Statesmen will be the No. 5 seed and travel to Valdosta State for the first round.
FOR UM: Montevallo needs a win and a West Alabama loss to lock down the eighth and final spot and a GSC Tournament date with top seed Union University.
RUSH RECORD UPDATE: Alondrea Rush went 4-for-8 from beyond the arc against Mississippi College to move past
Chelsey Rhodes (206) for
2nd in career 3-pointers made with 209. The Horn Lake, Miss., native is
3rd in careeer 3-pointers attempted with 608. Rush is 29th on the DSU career scoring list with 1,177 points and needs 19 points to pass
Amber Gean (1,195/2001-05) for 28th on the all-time scoring list.
LADY STATESMEN REWIND: The Lady Statesmen basketball team went on a 20-2 run in the fourth quarter to erase a 75-71 deficit en route to a 91-77 win over arch rival Mississippi College on Senior Day Sat., Feb. 23 at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
Nia Johnson poured in a career-high 28 points to lead four Lady Statesmen in double digits. Seniors
Frederica Haywood and
Alondrea Rush also had big games in their final regular season home game as a Lady Statesmen. Haywood scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to post her fourth double-double of the season. Rush chipped add 14 points, including four three-pointers to move into second place all-time on the Lady Statesmen career 3-pointers list with 209. INSIDE THE UM SERIES: Delta State and Montevallo meet for the 17th time and for the 7th time at Trustmark Arena in Montevallo, Ala. Delta State captured a 65-45 win on Sat., Dec. 1, 2018, in the first meeting this season. DSU's last trip to Montevallo saw the Lady Statesmen earn a 63-58 on Feb. 10, 2018, to move to 6-0 in the series on the road.
