Statesmen Fall To Montevallo On Buzzer Beater

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Micah Fuller hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the University of Montevallo (10-20, 6-14 GSC) to a 57-54 win over the Delta State University men's basketball team (16-10, 12-7 GSC) on Thurs., Feb. 28 at Trustmark Arena.
 
The last-second shot capped an 8-0 run by the Falcons to close the game after trailing 54-48.

The Statesmen will be the No. 5 seed and will travel to No. 4 Christian Brothers in Memphis, Tenn., for the first round of the in the 2019 Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament on Tues., March 5.
 
Matthew Wilson led the Statesmen with 14 points on 5-of-10 shots from the floor, including two 3-pointers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montevallo took an early 8-0 lead on a Wade Loman just over 3:30 into the game.
  • The Statesmen went on a 10-2 run to tie the game 10-10 on a Matthew Wilson 3-pointer with 12:56 left in the first half.
  • Cedric Harper capped a 6-2 run that gave DSU a 17-14 lead with 5:39 to go before halftime.
  • DSU followed up the 6-2 run with a 8-2 run to build an 25-18 lead on an Armon Benford basket with 2:17 remaining in the first half
  • Wilson hit a jump shot to give the Statesmen a 27-20 lead at the 1:40 mark.
  • Kaleel Solomon canned 3-pointer with 1:05 left to close the first half scoring with DSU leading 27-23.
  • DeMarco wens cut the UM deficit to 27-25 to start the second half.
  • A Harper and free throw dunk on the end of an 11-2 run opened up a 38-27 lead 4:03 into the second half.
  • Jeremiah Curtis knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the DSU lead down to 38-33 with 13:13 to go in the second half.
  • Cameron Burkett made a layup and Wilson made two free throws to extend the lead to 42-33 at the under 12-minute media time out.
  • Montevallo went on a 7-2 run to claw back to within three at 49-46 with 7:01 to play.
  • Justin Slocum's 3-point play gave the Statesmen a 52-46 lead at the 6:05 mark.
  • Armon Benford pushed the DSU lead to 54-48 with 3:28 left in the game.
  • With the game tied 54-54, Fuller rebounded a Statesmen miss and made the buzzer-beater on the other end give UM a 56-54 win.  Fuller's basket capped an 8-0 run to close the game for the Falcons.

  • Benford also had eight points and Cameron Burkett tied his season-high with seven rebounds.
  • Fuller had 15 points and Owens had 14 points to lead Montevallo.
