CLEVELAND, Miss.- The Delta State University softball team will return home looking for their first victory of the season at the friendly confines of University Field. The Lady Statesmen will take on the Wolves in a single game on Saturday at 5. Then a double header is set for Noon on Sunday. Live stats and complete game recaps will be available at GoStatesmen.com.
INSIDE THE UWG SERIES: Under the tutelage of
Casey Bourgoyne-Charles, the Lady Statesmen are 17-12 versus West Georgia. However, UWG has won the last two series. Last season in Carrollton, UWG won the first game of the series 13-1. DSU responded with a 8-4 vicotry in game two. Then UWG won the final game 6-3.Â
DELTA STATE REWIND: The Lady Statesmen lost two of three this past weekend to Shorter University. Shorter won both games on Saturday 7-0 and 4-2. DSU responded in a rain shortened game winning 3-1 in six inngings. Delta State is looking for its first win at home of the year. They are 0-3 at home after the Lady Bulldogs edged the Lady Statesmen 5-3, 10-3, and 9-7 (8). Â
BIG THREE LEADING LADY STATESMEN AT PLATE: Seniors
Kelly Byrd and
Jordan Jones, and freshman
Ta'mya Johnson are leading the Lady Statesmen offensive onslaught this season, combining for 62 hits, 10 doubles, nine home runs and 46 RBIs through the team's first 20 games. Byrd is leading the way with a .440 average (22-of-50) with 16 runs scored, two doubles, five home runs and 15 RBIs. She is tops in the GSC in on base percentage and home runs. Jones is hitting .339 (21-of-62) with four doubles, two home runs, 16 RBIs and 13 runs scored. Johnson enters the week with a .317 (11-of-60) average with four doubles, two home runs, nine runs scored and 15 RBIs.
ONE-TWO PUNCH: Delta State features a solid one-two punch in the circle this season with
Nicole Fullilove and
Mari Alex Sandridge. The duo the Lady Statesmen off to an 11-9 start. Fullilove, a senior from Batesville, is 6-6 on the year with a 3.15 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 71.0 innings. Her 57 strikeouts are third in the GSC. Sandridge, a junior from Hernando, is 5-3 with a 5.21 ERA. The pair are tied for third in the league with five wins apiece.
Delta State enters this weekend's series versus UWG with a 3-0 record against teams ranked in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. The Lady Statesmen upended No. 5 Saint Leo (1-0) at the Gulf Shores Invitational followed by back-to-back victories over No. 12 Illinois-Springfield (9-7) and No. 1 Southern Indiana (13-4) at the Charger Chillout in Huntsville, Ala. Â
FRESHMEN MAKING AN IMPACT: A pair of freshmen have made an immediate impact, as infielder
Taylor Picou and outfielder
Ta'mya Johnson have become mainstays in the Lady Statesmen lineup. Picou, who smashed the game-winning home run in the top of the 7th inning in DSU's 2-1 series clinching victory at Montevallo, has anchored third base while hitting .262 with six runs scored, a double, two home runs and four RBIs. Johnson enters the week with a .365 (19-of-52) average with four doubles, two home runs, nine runs scored and 15 RBIs.
VICE GRIP: Junior catcher
Carlie Vice has reached base safely in 11 consecutive games for the Lady Statesmen. The Biloxi native has started 18 games for DSU behind the plate, batting .264 with a home run and six RBIs. She has also scored ten runs and been hit by seven pitches, which ranks third in the GSC. In her 15 starts at catcher, Vice has played error-free defense at a taxing position. In 78 chances, Vice has recorded 81 put-outs with 13 assists.
