Herbison, Barlow Homer To Lead Statesmen Past UWG

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Weber Herbison and Jake Barlow belted home runs to lead No. 10/1 Delta State University baseball (16-2, 8-1 GSC) to a 6-2 win over the University of West Georgia (6-13, 3-6GSC) on Saturday night at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.
 
Herbison's two-run home run to left  in the second inning broke a 2-2 tie and put the Statesmen in the lead for good while Jake Barlow'sleadoff blast pushed the lead to 5-2 in the fifth.
 
Hunter Riggins recorded his Gulf South Conference leading sixth win, recording five strikeouts while giving up two runs on eight hits in seven innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • West Georgia took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Logan Taylor doubled in a run and another run scored on a Brody Wortham ground out to first base.
  • The Statesmen used a four-run second to erase the deficit and take a 4-2 lead. Darek Sargent had an RBI double to score CJ Estave and Matt Majeur singled and scored on a Josh Russell sac-fly. Herbison connected on a two-run home run to cap the scoring in the inning.
  • Delta State added two runs in fifth for a 6-2 lead. Barlow hit a solo home run to lead off the innings and Russell singled with the bases loaded.  
  • The Wolves loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth only to see Hunter Riggins roll a double play to get out of trouble.

ON THE MOUND HAPPENED
  • Hunter Riggins (6-0) struck out five, walked three and allowed two runs on eight hits to earn the win.
  • Bryan Parker (1-4) allowed four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and four walks as the pitcher of record for the Wolves.
  • Tyler Walton recorded three strikeouts and allowed two hits over two scoreless innings to close the game for the Statesmen.
NOTEABLES
  • Herbison's home run to left in the second inning was his first career home run.
  • Barlow's solo homer in the fifth was his team-leading fifth.
  • The Statesmen lead the all-time series with West Georgia 26-10 and are 12-5 at Ferriss Field.
