CLINTON, Miss.— No. 13/23 Delta State University baseball team (34-11, 20-9 GSC) erased a 4-0 deficit with six unanswered runs to earn a 6-4 win over rival Mississippi College (28-15, 20-7) on Sunday at Frierson Field.
 
David Herrington, Darek Sargent, Jake Barlow, Patrick Hodges, Josh Russell and Hayden White each had two hits to aid the Statesmen 14 hit attack. Weber Herbison led the Statesmen with three RBIs.
 
Dalton Minton tossed seven innings with four strikeouts, allowing four runs on six hits to post his ninth win of the season.
 
Patrick Hodges allowed one hit over two scoreless innings to pick up his first career save.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Choctaws took a 4-0 in the third. Blaine Crim doubled home Dylan Duplechain and Payton Yawn followed with an RBI single to plate Grant Barber. Luke Yancey's single brought scored Brandon Broussard.
  • Delta State cut the MC lead to 4-2 in the fourth. Hodges led off with a double and scored on a Matt Majeur single to left and Majeur scored when Herbison reached on a fielder's choice.
  • The Choctaws put a runner in scoring position with two outs in the fifth only to see Brett Young make a sliding catch in shallow center to end the inning.
  • Two runs crossed the plate for the Statesmen to tie the game 4-4 in the sixth. Barlow led off with single and Hodges and Majeur were hit by a pitch to load the bases. Russell was hit by a pitch to score Barlow and Herbison drew a walk to score Hodges. 
  • The Statesmen grabbed a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh. Sargent doubled to start the inning and scored on an error after a Josh Russell infield single.
  • Hodges entered the game in relief of Minton to record two ground outs and a fly out and strand the tying run at third.
  • Delta State added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to build the lead to 6-4. Hayden White singled with two outs and after moving to third on a Brett Young single, scored on a David Herrington single to right.
  • MC put the tying run aboard with two outs in the ninth but Hodges coaxed a ground ball from Billy Cameron to record the final out.
ON THE MOUND
  • Minton (9-2) gave up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts in seven innings pitched to earn the win.
  • MC starter Ryan Lane (4-3) struck out six and scattered two hits over three scoreless innings before exiting the game with a blister on his pitching hand.
  • Tim Holloway (1-2) gave up a run on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks as the pitcher of record for MC.
  • Hodges (1) yielded one hit over two scoreless innings for his first career save.
NOTEABLES
  • Herrington, Sargent, Barlow, Hodges, Russell and White recorded two hits apiece in the Statesmen's 14 hit attack.
  • Sargent had a pair of doubles to tie him with Barlow for the team lead with 12.
  • Minton earned his GSC leading ninth win of the season, taking over the lead from teammate Hunter Riggins (8).
  • Head Coach Mike Kinnison earned win number 973 putting him 27 wins shy of 1,000.

UP NEXT
  • Delta State will be the No. 3 seed in the 2019 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships on May 3-7 in Oxford, Ala.  The Statesmen will play No. 6 seed Valdosta State at 10 a.m. on Friday.
