Statesmen advance to Saturday's title game with 6-4 win over VSU

CLEVELAND, Miss. — After scoring two runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 6-4 lead, the No. 2 seed Statesmen of Delta State University (41-12) escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to hold on for the victory over No. 6 seed Valdosta State University (31-22) in game three of the NCAA Division II South II Region Tournament on Friday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.
 
DSU advances to the championship round of the South II Regional on Saturday, May 18 versus a yet to be determined opponent. First pitch is set for 12 PM.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Blazers scored a run in the first two innings to build a 2-0 lead. Josh Brought had an RBI single in the first and Logan Stephens hit a solo home run in the second.
  • Delta State scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. CJ Estave singled and scored when Hayden White reached on a fielder's choice and Weber Herbison had an double down the line in left to tie the game. David Herrington singled home Herbison to put the Statesmen in front in the third.
  • Estave belted a solo home run to left in the top of the fifth inning to extend DSU's lead to 4-2.
  • A two-out walk to Mike Christopolus in the bottom of the sixth led to a run for the Blazers, as Andrew Williamson doubled off the right field wall to cut the DSU lead to one, 4-3.
  • The Blazers tied the contest at 4-4 in the bottom of the eight on Josh Broughton's sac-fly RBI.
  • In the top of the ninth, DSU plated two runs to take a 6-4 lead. Matthew Majeur's bases-loaded walk scored David Herrington for the first run while Josh Russell's RBI groundout to short plated Darek Sargent.     

ON THE MOUND  
  • Dalton Minton (11-3) allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits with six strikeouts in 8.0 innings pitched to earn the win. The senior from Horn Lake, Miss., did not allow multiple hits to any VSU batter, as he scattered four hits over his 8.0 innings of work.
  • Tommy Childree (7) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth with two strikeouts to earn his seventh save of the season.
  • Trevin Eubanks (0-4) suffered the loss for the Blazers, giving up two runs on one hit with two strikeouts.
  • Cooper Cain started the game for the Blazers, working 3.2 innings while allowing three runs on five hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.
  • Sean Gabel (3.2) and Bryce Van Horn (0.2) also worked in relief for VSU.

NOTEABLES
  • C.J. Estave was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run and one RBI. It was his second-straight multiple hit game in the South II Regional.
  • Herrington was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI as well.
  • The win gives Head Coach Mike Kinnison 980 wins and he needs 20 wins to reach 1,000 career wins.
