OXFORD, Ala.— No. 13/18 Delta State University baseball team (35-12) suffered a 10-3 set back to the University of West Georgia (28-23) in the second round of the Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship on Saturday at Choccolooco Park.
The Statesmen will play the winner of the University of Montevallo/Shorter University game in an elimination game on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Josh Russell had three hits followed by two-hit performances by
David Herrington,
Jake Barlow, Matt Mejeur and
Hayden White for the Statesmen.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delta State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Jake Barlow singled and scored on a Majeur two-out RBI single.
- The Wolves answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Logan Taylor belted a three-run home run followed by a solo homer by Dan Oberst.
- UWG posted two runs in the bottom of the second to build the lead to 5-1. Dylan Johnson singled and scored on a Brad Barnes double and Barnes scored on a Bryan Dansereau double.
- The Statesmen cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth. Russell singled and scored on a Hayden White double and White scored on a Brett Young single.
- West Georgia pushed its lead to 9-3 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Dansereau hit a solo home run and Taylor doubled in Marlow. Taylor came home when Joseph Hill was hit by a pitch and Dylan Johnson hit into a double play to plate Oberst.
- Barnes walked and scored on a Marlowe single to extend the Wolves' lead to 10-3 in the fifth.
ON THE MOUND
- Minton (9-3) allowed five runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout in 1.1 innings pitched to suffer the loss for the Statesmen.
- Ryan Parker (5-5) gave up three runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts in 8.0 innings of work to earn the win for UWG.
NOTEABLES
- Russell went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Herrington, Barlow, Majeur and White had two hits each to lead the Statesmen 12-hit attack.
- White's fourth-inning triple was the 12th of the season for the Statesmen, ranking second in the GSC.
- Seven of the 11 runs scored by the Statesmen in the GSC Tournament have come with two outs.
- The Statesmen have posted double-digit hits in six straight and in 10 of their last 12 games.
- UWG's 10 earned runs tied the season-high for earned runs allowed and the 16 hits set a season-high for hits allowed.
