Staying Alive! Barlow, Hougesen Pace Statesmen Past Montevallo

OXFORD, Ala.— No. 13/18 Delta State University baseball team (36-12) tied a season-high with four home runs to stay alive in the Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship with a 10-3 win over the University of Montevallo (23-28) on Sunday at Choccolooco Park.
 
Jake Barlow went 3-for-4 with a career-high two home runs and six RBIs and CJ Estave was 3-for-3 with an inside the park grand slam and four RBIs to lead a 12-hit attack.
 
Senior Seth Hougesen struck out a career-high 10 Falcons while yielding three runs, two earned, on seven hits for his third complete game this season.
 
Delta State advances to Monday's round of games against an opponent and time to be determined.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montevallo struck for a run in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Ben Teel doubled and scored on a Ryan Brooks single to right.
  • Darek Sargent hit a two-run home run with Brett Young aboard the bases and Jake Barlow followed with a solo shot to put the Statesmen in front 3-1.
  • Davis Lott hit a solo home run to cut the DSU lead to 3-2 in the fourth.
  • The Statesmen used a three-run fifth to extend the lead to 6-2. David Herrington singled and after moving to third on a Sargent double, scored on a wild pitch. Sargent scored when Barlow belted a two-run home run to center.
  • Montevallo cut the DSU lead to 6-3 with a run in the fifth. Jason Cryar doubled and scored on a throwing error on a Sebastian Samuels single.
  • The lead extended the lead to 10-3 in the sixth. Herbison singled followed by walks to David Herrington and Barlow to load the bases and set up CJ Estave's inside the park grand slam off the center field wall.
  • The lead grew to 14-3 after a four-run seventh. Barlow unloaded the bases with a double off the wall in right center before scoring on a Hayden White ground out.
ON THE MOUND  
  • Hougesen (8-0) struck out a career-high 10 Falcons while yielding three runs, two earned, on seven hits for his third complete game this season.
  • Griffin Lape (0-1) took the loss for the Falcons, giving up three runs on four hits with a strikeout against two walks.

  • Hougesen struck out a career-high 10 batters, eclipsing his previous high of nine against East Central (Okla.) on Feb. 1, 2019,
  • The Statesmen notched their 13th multi-strikeout game this season for the Statesmen.
  • Barlow belted two-home runs for his career multi-homer game.
  • The Statesmen tied a season-high with four home runs for their ninth multi-homer game this season previously set in a 16-6 win over West Florida March 24, 2109.
  • The Statesmen had 12 hits and have posted double-digit hits in all three tournament games, seven straight overall and in 11 of the last 13 games.
