GAME NOTES WEEK 8
CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The No. 15 Delta State University women's basketball (13-1, 6-1 GSC) welcomes No.21 Union University (13-3, 7-1 GSC) to open a two-game Gulf South Conference home stand at 5:30 PM on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020 at Walter Sillers. The Lady Statesmen entertain Christian Brothers University (4-8, 3-5 GSC) to close the weekend on Sat., Jan. 18 at 2 PM.
LADY STATESMEN REWIND: The Green-and-White swept the West Florida-Valdosta State road swing for the first time during the
Craig Roden era. Delta State claimed a 62-44 win over UWF on Thursday as the Lady Statesmen held their fourth opponent under the 50-point mark this season.
Zyaire Ewing had 19 points followed by
Quantesha Patterson with 13 points and 16 rebounds and
Ernesha Chatman with 11 points.
Nia Johnson had a season-high 23 points to lead DSU to a 66-49 win over Valdosta State. Ewing and Patterson followed Johnson with 20 and 10 points, respectively.
APPROACHING MILESTONE WINS: Lady Statesmen Head Coach
Craig Roden collected career win number 596 following DSU's 66-59 GSC road win over Valdosta State on Jan. 11, 2020. Roden needs six wins to earn his 600th career, four wins for 400 Division II wins and two wins for 100 win sat DSU. The Guntersville, Ala., native has 96 wins at Delta State and with four more wins will become the first coach in GSC history to have 100 wins at three different GSC member schools.
PATROLLING THE PAINT: The Lady Statesmen lead the GSC in offensive boards per game (16.5/16th NCAA), rebounds per game (47.7/4th NCAA) and rebound margin (10.2/16th NCAA) and 3rd in rebounds (668/23rd NCAA). The duo of
Quantesha Patterson and
Zyaire Ewing are proving to be a formidable foe in the paint, combining for 29.1 points and 24.5 rebounds per game. Patterson leads the GSC in rebounds per game (14.1/3rd NCAA), offensive rebounds (5,8/2nd NCAA), total rebounds (191/1st NCAA) and defensive rebounds (11th NCAA). The Maben, Miss., is 12th in the GSC in scoring (14.4). Ewing is 4th in the GSC defensive rebounds per game (7.5/20th NCAA), 3rd in rebounds per game (10.9/12th NCAA), and 4th in rebounds (152/ 170th NCAA). Ewing is 2nd in blocked shots per game (2.1/ 24th NCAA) and blocked shots (29/22nd NCAA).
D-FENCE: The Green-and-White are 2nd in the GSC in scoring defense (56.9/31st NCAA) while ranking 1st in 3-point field goal percentage defense (22.5/ 8th NCAA) and field goal percentage defense (32.8/9th NCAA). West Alabama leads the GSC allowing 52.0 points followed by Lee (54.6). Delta State allowed 68.0 points per game through the first two games but is allowing 54 points per game in the eight games since. The Lady Statesmen led the NCAA in 2015-16 (50.3) and 2013-14 (53.7), ranked 2nd in 2011-12 (51.4), 5th in 2014-15 (55.7), 10th in 2017-18 (56.5) and 16th in 2016-17 (57.1). Since 2011-12, the Lady Statesmen have ranked in the top 10 in scoring defense five of the last eight years.
PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES:
Quantesha Patterson leads GSC in field goal percentage (63.1/5th NCAA), and 10th in field goals made (77).
Nia Johnson is 3rd in the GSC in field goals attempted (207), and is tied with Ewing for 12th in field goal made (75).

MORE D-FENSE: In 56 quarters, the Lady Statesmen have held opponents to single digits in 15 times, most recently holding UWF (1.9.2020) to eight points in the seocnd and fourth periods. The Lady Statesmen yielded a quarter-low five points in the fourth quarter against Lane College (11.15.19). Delta State held Miles College (12.7.19) to six points in the first and seven points in the second quarter for a season-low 13 points in a half. As a team, the Lady Statesmen are 4th in the conference in turnovers forced per game (19.2), and 2nd in blocked shots per game (4.6/23rd NCA) and 2nd in blocked shots (65/26th NCAA).

HALL OF FAME '19: DSU officially named its honorees on Monday, Nov. 4, 2019. Lady Statesmen baseketball player Nicole Trotter Francis (Women's Basketball) will join her husban Rodney Francis (Class of 2018) in the DSU Sports Hall of Fame.
