CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University women's basketball team fell short in a closely contested game, 62-59 against the Union University on Thursday, January 16th at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

Quantesha Patterson had a career-high night with 26 points, and recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 15 rebounds in the losing effort..

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lady Statesmen led 4-2 with halfway through the first period. Zyaire Ewing scored both buckets for DSU.
  • Union took a 7-6 lead after a three pointer by Emily Beard with 3:59 left in the period.
  • Quantesha Patterson's layup put the Lady Statesmen back in the lead 8-7 with 3:10 remaining in the first.
  • Union had a four-point lead, 12-8 at the end of the first period.
  • At the 4:10 media timeout Union led DSU by seven, 20-13.
  • The Lady Bulldogs still led Delta State by seven, 29-22 going into half time. Patterson led the Lady Statesmen in scoring with 13 in the first half. Jada Smith led Union in scoring with 14 in the first half.
  • With 7:05 left in the third period Union had extended their lead to 10, 34-24.
  • Union still led by 10, 38-28 at the 5:02 media timeout in the third period.
  • An 8-0 run by DSU cut the Union lead to just four, 38-34 with 3:22 remaining in the period.
  • With 2:16 remaining in the third period Delta State had cut Union's lead to just two, 40-38 forcing the Lady Bulldogs to call a timeout.
  • A three pointer from Nia Johnson put the Lady Statesmen in the lead 45-44 with :21 left in the third period.
  • A buzzer beater jumper by Smith gave the Lady Bulldogs a 46-45 lead heading into the fourth period.
  • Delta State took an early 53-48 lead thanks to a 6-0 run with all six points coming from Johnson.
  • Union took back their lead 57-55 with 4:26 reaming in the game, after a 5-0 run.
  • With 1:54 remaining in the game Union still led by two, 59-57.
  • An offensive rebound and basket from Patterson tied the game 59-59 with 1:34 remaining.
  • A pair of free throws from Smith gave Union a 61-59 lead with :14 left in the game.
  • Union would go on to win 62-59.

  • Despite a rough first period the Union Lady Bulldogs shot fifty percent or better in each of the last three period.
