Lady Statesmen Drop Season Opener to West Alabama

Ewing paces Lady Statesmen with 20 points, 7 rebounds

LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- Tazsa Garrett-Hammett scored 20 points to lead the University of West Alabama (1-0, 1-0 GSC) to a 74-54 win over the Delta State University women's basketball team on Saturday at Pruitt Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • An Alanna Smith basket and a layup by Zyaire Ewing gave the Lady Statesmen a 9-7 lead with 6:10 left in the first quarter.
  • Jala Williams' jumper in the lane capped a 10-0 UWA run and gave the home team a 17-9 lead with 4:32 remaining in the opening period.
  • A Kristin Brown jumper and a pair of Shaniyah Buford free throws closed the deficit to 20-17 with just over a minute to play in the first quarter.
  • Bria Dent's layup and free throw put UWA ahead 23-17 heading to the second quarter.
  • The Lady Statesmen opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 23 following a Smith basket.
  • The Tigers outscored DSU 9-4 to close the first half with a 39-32 lead.
  • UWA grabbed a 13-point advantage on a Naelyn Rios jumper at the 3:09 mark of the third quarter.  
  • UWA outscored Delta State 15-11 in the third quarter to hold a 54-43 lead into the final quarter.
  • Ewing tipped in a Brown miss to cut the UWA lead down to 55-45 with 8:31 to go in the fourth quarter.
  • The Lady Statesmen had a 3:19 scoring drought while the lead grew to 65-47 on a Dent free throw with 5:32 left in the fourth quarter.
STAT OF THE GAME
  • The Tigers netted 24 points off 22 Lady Statesmen turnovers and had 16 second chance points off 12 offensive rebounds.
NOTABLES
  • Ewing led the Lady Statesmen with 20 points and seven rebounds, followed by Buford with 12 points.
  • Brown also had seven rebounds and added six points.
  • Garrett-Hammett's 20 points lead three Tigers in double figures.
  • The Lady Statesmen are 41-12-1 all-time in season openers, including a 10-10 mark on the road.
