BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- For the second consecutive week, Delta State University men's basketball player
Maalik Cartwright was named Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
The Holly Grove, Ark., native earns back-to-back Freshman of the Week awards on the back of strong outings at Christian Brothers and Union. Cartwright averaged 19.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game and added 2.5 assists and 2.0 blocks per game in those two games.
The freshman guard poured in 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in an 87-77 loss on the road to CBU. He also added three assists and a pair of blocks. Cartwright followed up that performance with 18 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two more blocks in DSU's loss to Union.
Cartwright was 17-for-30 (57 percent) from the floor for the weekend and has registered double-doubles in four consecutive for the Green-and-White.
The Statesmen return to action at home for GSC contests against West Florida on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Valdosta State on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m.
