Lady Statesmen #BEATmc In Overtime

CLINTON, Miss -- The Delta State University women's basketball team (19-6, 12-6 GSC) used an 11-1 run in overtime to erase a five-point deficit and grab an 80-76 win over the rival Mississippi College (11-13, 8-10 GSC) on Thursday night at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

Nia Johnson had 25 points and Zyaire Ewing scored 19 points and pulled down 20 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass, to lead four Lady Statesmen in double figures.

 HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • A Zariah Mathews bucket gave the Lady Choctaws a 7-1 lead just under the midway point of the first quarter. 
  • Matthews hit a 3-pointer with 3:54 remaining to extend the led to 10-3. 
  • Shaniya Buford dialed up a 3-pointer and T'Kyra Hicks hit a jump shot with 58 seconds left to cut the MC lead to 10-8 at the end of the first stanza.
  • The Lady Statesmen tied the game 12-12 early in the second quarter on baskets by Johnson and Kirstin Brown.
  • MC scored the next five points to jump out to a 17-12 lead only to see Ewing and Quantesha Patterson score back-to-back baskets to cut the deficit to 17-12.
  • Two free throws by Shanell Kitchens stretch the lead to 24-18 with 2:33 to play in the second quarter. 
  • The Lady Statesmen outscored MC 8-4 over the final 2:21 to trail 29-26 at halftime. 
  • The Choctaws opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 35-26 lead following a Moriah Hurst jump shot at the 8:00 mark. 
  • Delta State answered with a 10-3 to cut the lead to 38-36 on a Nia Johnson 3-pointer with 5:46 left in the third quarter. 
  • Trailing 40-36, Delta State went on a 9-2 run to take a 45-42 lead on an Ewing rebound and put back with 3:05 showing on the third-quarter clock. 
  • A free throw by Thompson and a 3-pointer by Matthews push the Lady Choctaws back to a 46-45 lead with 2:10 left. 
  • Moriah Hurt hit a jump shot with 1:14 left to help MC take a 48-47 lead into the final quarter. 
  • The Lady Choctaws started the fourth quarter on a 13-3 run to build the lead to 61-50 with 7:33 remaining. 
  • The Lady Statesmen went on a 12-3 spurt with Johnson making two free throws to tie the game 66-66 with six seconds left to force overtime. 
  • A Coco Thompson 3-pointer pushed MC out to a 72-67 lead with 3:46 to go in overtime.
  • Johnson, Patterson, and Buford made layups during an 11-1 run to put the Lady Statesmen ahead 78-72 with 2:02 to go in overtime. 
  • The lead dwindled to 78-76 following a Hurst 3-pointer with 1:00 left in the extra frame. 
  • Johnson connected on two free throws with 32 seconds left to give DSU an 80-76 lead.
  • Mississippi College missed a 3-pointer and Patterson collected the rebound to seal the win. 
TURNING POINTS
  • Johnson's two free throws sent the game to overtime tied 66-66.
  • Trailing 72-67 in overtime, Delta State went on an 11-1 to take a 78-72 lead with 2:02 remaining. 
STAT OF THE GAME 
  • The Lady Statesmen collected 17 offensive rebounds and had 21-second chance points while outscoring MC 40-30 in the paint.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 
  • Johnson scored 25 points to lead four Lady Statesmen in double figures. 
  • Ewing scored 19 points and grabbed 20 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, with three blocks and two steals for her 11th double-double of the season. 
  • Buford added 15 points followed by Patterson with 10 points and nine rebounds. 
  • Matthews led the Lady Choctaws with 22 points followed by Hurst with 16 points and Hobson with 15 points.
