CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University softball team got back-to-back home runs by
Jenny Griggers and
Taylor Picou in the sixth inning of game three and the Lady Statesmen beat Christian Brothers University 4-1 in Sunday's rubber match at University Field.
The Lady Statesmen hit six home runs in total on the weekend. Jacklyn Deason,
Jenny Griggers and
Julie Scheuermann each left the yard in DSU's 7-6 game two victory. Griggers added another long ball in game three, while Picou also hit two home runs for the Green-and-White.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GM 1
- The Lady Bucs jumped out to a 2-0 lead with the game's first two runs in the top of the fifth on a DSU throwing error.
- Bree Brady homered in the sixth frame to extend CBU's lead to 3-0.
ON THE MOUND, GM 1
- Olivia Burns (2-6) took the loss, going the distance for Delta State while allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GM 2
- DSU got on the board first thanks to a two-run shot by Jaclyn Deason in the bottom of the first inning.
- CBU cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second thanks to a sacrifice fly from Elaina McGill.
- A home run by CBU's Mackenzie Puckett in the top of the fourth tied the score 2-2.
- Delta State took back the lead on a Jenny Griggers home run in the bottom of the fourth.
- Christian Brothers jumped back in front, at 5-3, in the top of the seventh after Puckett's three-run homer.
- Scheuermann answered Puckett's blast, however, with a two-run homer to left center to tie the game again.
- Ashley Dyer clubbed a go-ahead home run in the top of the eighth to give CBU a 6-5 lead.
- The Lady Statesmen again answered, however, as MC Sweatt drove in the tying run with a single to right field. Emily Baker then scored the winning run on a throwing error by CBU.
ON THE MOUND, GM 2
- Burns threw 6.2 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits and added four strikeouts
- Emily Baker (1-2) notched the win for DSU. Baker relieved Burns in the top of seventh inning and gave up a run on two hits and recorded a pair of strikeouts.
- Macy Cumming started for CBU. Cumming gave up three runs on four hits through three innings of work.
- Mackenzie Puckett (1-3) came on in relief of Cumming in the bottom of the fourth and gave up four runs on six hits to take the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GM 3
- Brady doubled in a run in the top of the fourth frame as CBU took an early 1-0 lead.
- Delta State answered in the bottom of the inning, as Picou hit her second home run of the season.
- Griggers and Picou then hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning to grab a 4-1 lead before a line out double play helped the Lady Statesmen end the game.
ON THE MOUND, GM 3
- Burns started the game and worked 3.1 innings. She gave up one run on two hits, walked four and struck out one.
- Baker (2-2) picked up the win for DSU coming on in relief of Burns. She tossed 3.2 shutout innings and scattered four hits and struck out three Lady Bucs.
WEEKEND NOTABLES:
- Kailyn Lofton, Griggers, and Deason all had a multi-hit game in game two of the series. Lofton and Griggers both went 2-4, while Deason went 3-4. Deason had three RBI on the day and recorded for first career home run.
- The Lady Statesmen hit six combined home runs in the series.
- Delta State secured it's first winning weekend of the season and took it's first GSC series of the campaign.

The Lady Statesmen travel to Pensacola for a three-game GSC series against West Florida. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m., with a single game to follow Sunday, March 1 at 1 p.m.
