PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Delta State University softball team dropped two games to defending Gulf South Conference champions, the University of West Florida on Saturday, Feb. 29.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME 1
- UWF was first on the board after scoring six in the bottom of the second. Courtney McLennan doubled to left center to drive in the first run. Kayla Mayo then lined out to right field to score Kara Wilson, Teala Howard singled to shortstop, scoring McLellan. Mika Garcia followed suite with a single to left field to score Howard. Delta State then committed a throwing error that allowed Garcia and Grace Gilbert to score.
- In the top of the third, the Lady Statesmen got on the board. Kailyn Lofton doubled to left center to drive in Olivia Dick, and then Taylor Picou grounded out to third base to plate Lofton.
- In the bottom of the third for UWF, Mayo grounded out to shortstop to score Wilson
- In the top of the sixth for DSU, Callie Newman tripled down the right field line to bring in Karlie Stine.
- The Argos then got a Wilson single to score Jacquelynne Poling, and McLellan doubled to left center to scored Wilson and Ally Merrill. Howard then doubled down the right field line to bring in McLellan.

GAME 2
- UWF scored first in game two, making it 3-0 after one. Angela Agurkis doubled with the bases loaded to score Garcia, Gilbert and Howard.
- The Argos added seven in the in the bottom of the second. Gilbert tripled down the left field line scoring Howard and Jibrasha Moore. Garcia homered to left field which also scored Gilbert, and Ashley McNally singled to right field allowing Callan Taylor and Agurkis to score.
- In the bottom of the third, Howard tripled to right center to bring home Moore and Morgan Zettle. Gilbert followed with a double to right field to score Howard and Taylor doubled home Gilbert.
ON THE MOUND:
GM 1
- Olivia Burns (2-7) allowed six runs on six hits through 1.2 innings to take the loss.
- Emily Burns relieved Burns in the bottom of the second and allowed five runs on five hits in four innings of work.
- Grace Gilbert started for UWF. Gilbert gave up three runs on five hits through six innings.
GM 2
- Jenny Griggers (0-2) started the game for DSU and took the loss. Griggers allowed seven runs on eight hits in a couple of innings. Griggers then re-entered in the bottom of the third to finish the game.
- Baker relieved Griggers in the bottom of the second and allowed seven runs on six hits through 0.1 inning.Â
- Kelsey Sweatt (5-1) got the start and the win for the Argos. Sweatt gave up two hits in five innings and shutout the Lady Statesmen.Â
NOTABLES:
GM 1
- Oliva Dick led the Lady Statesmen in hitting as she went 2-for-3 in the game.
- Callie Newman clubbed her second triple of the season, which leads the team.
GM 2
-  Mary "MC" Sweatt went 1-for-1, and Kaylin Lofton went 1-for-2.Â
