Statesmen Defeat Montevallo on Senior Day

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State men's basketball team capped off the 2019-2020 season with a 89-78 victory over the University of Montevallo on Saturday afternoon. The Statesmen were led by Michael Motley who finished the day with a career high 20 points. It was the final game for Anderson McCoy who finished with 17 points and five assists and also for Cameron Burkett who had four points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen trailed Montevallo 11-7 at the 14:53 media timeout.
  • A put back from Malik Cartwright cut the Falcons lead to one, 12-11 with 12:48 left in the first half.
  • At the 11:01 media timeout the Statesmen still trailed by one, 15-14.
  • Anderson McCoy's mid-range jumper with 10:50 left in half gave the Statesman a one-point lead, 16-15.
  • Delta State led 21-18 at the 7:51 media timeout.
  • A three ball from Michael Motley extended the Statesmen's lead to five, 27-22 with 4:44 left in the half.
  • Back-to-back buckets from the Montevallo cut the Statesmen's lead to one, 27-26 with 3:38 on the clock.
  • Keyshuan Street hit three, three-point field goals in the last two minutes of the first half, which extended DSU's lead to double digits, 36-26.
  • A last second three from Romario Spence cut Delta State's lead to seven, 36-29. Street led the Green and White in first-half scoring with 12, while Cedric Johnson led Montevallo with 13 points.
  • Motley rained his third three ball of the night to extend the DSU lead back to double digits, 41-31 with 18:13 remaining on the clock.
  • The Statesmen led by nine, 47-38 at the 15:47 media timeout.
  • Airen Brooks' three ball gave Delta State a 13-point lead, 53-40 with 14:56 left in the game.
  • The Statesmen's 9-0 run extended their lead to 18, 60-42 with 12:25 on the clock.

  • Delta State led 70-56 at the 6:58 media timeout.
  • Montevallo returned from the media timeout with a 7-0 run cutting the Statesmen's lead to nine, 72-63.
  • A pair of free throws from McCoy gave Delta State an 11-point lead, 77-66 with 2:29 left in the half.
  • Statesmen went on to defeat Montevallo 89-79.
TURNING POINT
  • Keyshuan Street hit three, three-point field goals in the last two minutes of the first half, which extended DSU's lead to double digits, 36-26. After that Delta State never had a smaller deficit than eight points.
STAT OF THE GAME
  • On the way to his career-high 20 point game, Motley shot a team best 70% from the field as well as 75% from beyond the arch.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Brooks recorded his 12th double-double of the season, scoring 19 points and grabbing 15 boards.
  • Motley set a new career high after scoring 20 points. His previous career-high was 18-point game against Bethel on 12/07/19.
  • Four of the five DSU starters finished with fifteen points or better.
  • After shooting 41.2% in the first-half the Statesmen improved to 59.2% in the second half.
