West Florida Scores Four Late Runs to Down Lady Statesmen

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team fell in the third and final game of the series 4-2 to the University of West Florida on Sunday. After holding a lead throughout most of the game, the Argos scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the game and the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lady Statesmen struck quickly in the top of the first. Olivia Dick walked, then Kailyn Lofton reached base on an error before a double steal allowed Dick to score the first run of the game. 
  • Delta State held that one-run lead until the sixth, when Jaclyn Deason singled to center field to score Katelynn Carcich to make it 2-0.
  • The Argos responded, however, as Mika Garcia singled to center field to score Teala Howard to out up UWF's first run in the sixth. West Florida followed with a solo homerun by Angela Agurkis.
  • Courtney McLellan kept the line moving, knocking a single down the right field line to plate Morgan Zettle. The final run was a Callan Taylor singled through the left side helped Kara Wilson to score to make it 4-2.

ON THE MOUND:
  • Olivia Burns (2-8) started for the Lady Statesmen. Burns allowed three runs on five hits through 5.2 innings. She had one strike out and no walks.
  • Emily Baker came on in relief and went one-third of an inning. She yielded a run on three hits.
  • Megan Warhurst (3-1) got the win for UWF. She worked six strong innings and gave up two runs on four hits and struck out seven.
NOTABLES:
  • Taylor Picou was the only Lady Statesmen to notch multiple hits, as she went 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Deason was the only DSU player to have a RBI for the Green and White.

The Lady Statesmen get set to host Auburn University Montgomery on Friday, March 6 at 3 p.m. at University Field.
