Patterson, Lady Statesmen Give Roden 599th Win Against CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Quantesha Patterson scored a career-high 28 points and collected 15 rebounds to help the Delta State University women's basketball team rally for a 78-70 win over Christian Brothers on Thursday at Canale Arena.

Lady Statesmen Head Coach Craig Roden, who joined the 400th GSC win club and earned his 100th win at Delta State less than a week ago against Auburn Montgomery, is now one-win shy of 600 career wins. Roden's 401 GSC wins puts him in a class with former Lady Statesmen coach Lloyd Clark as the only GSC women's basketball coaches with 400 GSC wins. Roden is also the first GSC Head Women's Basketball Coach to collect 101 wins at three-different league schools.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trailing 5-2, the Lady Statesmen went on a 6-0 run behind a pair of baskets by Patterson and a layup from Nia Johnson to take an 8-5 lead with 7:09 left in the first half.
  • CBU went ahead 11-8, only to see an Ernesha Chatman 3-pointer knot the game 11-11.
  • A three-point play by Patterson put the Lady Statesmen up 14-11 at the 3:48 mark of the first quarter.
  • Leading 14-13, Delta State outscored the Bucs 7-2 take a 21-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
  • A Zyaire Ewing layup followed by a Kirstin Brown free throw gave the Lady Statesmen a 26-20 lead with 7:49 left in the second quarter.
  • The Bucs went on an 11-1 run to take a 31-26 lead after Lauren Taylor's 3-pointer with 4:30 left in the half.
  • Trailing 31-28, Delta State used a 9-3 run to regain the lead 35-34 with 1:38 remaining in the second quarter.
  • Patterson gave DSU a 37-36 lead with 54 seconds left before a Kelsey Adams layup gave CBU a 38-37 halftime lead.
  • CBU began the third quarter with a 6-0 run to build a 44-37 lead and the Lady Bucs continued to remain in front, taking a 60-52 led on a Brynne Lytle 3-pointer with 53 seconds left in the third. 
  • CBU led 60-55 going into the final stanza, but the Lady Statesmen followed up a Ewing 3-point play with a 13-0 run.
  • Delta State also held CBU scoreless for 6:14 in the fourth to build a 68-60 lead with under five minutes remaining.
  • CBU scored the next six points, but, leading 70-67, Patterson made a layup with 38 seconds left to push the advantage to 72-67.
  • A Lytle 3-pointer for CBU with 31 seconds to play cut the lead to 72-70, but Delta State went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final 20 seconds to ice the game and grab the win 78-70.

 
TURNING POINT

  • The Lady Statesmen opened the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run, in addition to holding the Bucs scoreless for first 6:14 of the final period.

  • Patterson made 11-of-11 field goals before her first miss came with 1:56 left in the fourth quarter.

  • Quantesha Patterson recorded her 14th double-double, scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. The Maben, Miss., native also had four steals and an assist.
  • Nia Johnson added 20 points with four steals.
  • Zyaire Ewing finished with 17 points and nine boards.
  • This is the sixth game this season that Patterson and Ewing have recorded double-doubles on the same night.
  • CBU was led by Lytle with 28 points followed by Kelsey Adkins with 15 and Taylor with 13.
