Lady Statesmen Drop DH to AUM

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State Lady Statesmen softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Auburn University at Montgomery on Saturday afternoon and fell in all three games of the weekend to the Warhawks at University Field. 

The Lady Statesmen were led by Julie Scheuermann, who drove in three runs on her second homerun of the season on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME 1
  • AUM got on the board first after scoring four runs in the top of the first. Molly Cobb drove in the first two runs with a double through the left side. Kendall Tucker's two-run blast to left field was responsible for the last two runs of the inning.
  • The Lady Statesmen scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the second after Julie Scheuermann was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • The Warhawks added to their lead in the top of the second when Abby Krueger scored on a throw.
  • Lauren Haskins' RBI double to left field extended the Warhawk's lead to 6-1 in the top of the third.
  • Julie Scheuermann cut AUM's lead in half with a two-run shot to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • A five-run inning for the Warhawks led to a 6-3 victory over the Lady Statesmen.
GAME 2
  • AUM scored all three runs in the top of the third thanks to a three-run homer from Allison Miller.
  • The only Delta State hit came from Mary "MC" Sweatt in the second inning.
 
ON THE MOUND:
GM 1
  • Emily Baker (2-3) got the start for DSU in game one. Baker pitched 4.1 innings, giving up 11 runs, eight earned, on nine hits to take the loss.
  • Jenny Griggers relieved Baker in the top of the fifth and recorded the final two outs of the fifth.
  • Chanel Newcomer (3-3) got the win for AUM. Newcomer gave up one run off two this through two innings of work.
  • Bailie Barnes relieved Newcomer in the bottom of the third. Barnes allowed two runs off two hits through three innings. 
GM 2
  • Olivia Burns (2-10) started for the Green-and-White. Burns pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out four.
  • Alana Goble got the win in game three for AUM, as she tossed a one-hit shutout. 
NOTABLES
  • Julie Scheuermann led the team in hitting after plating three runs and hitting her second homerun of the season.
  • Newman was the only Lady Statesmen to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.
UP NEXT

The Lady Statesmen will host Arkansas Monticello for a double header on Tuesday, March 10th. Game one will begin at noon.
